His mother was named Frances and he used that name for one of his children. Since he married Dolly Hughes in 1875, the two older children - Frances and Elsworth - were born to his first wife, Martha Farley. And the two younger - Homer and Andrew - were born to his second wife, Dolly. John Congleton had a brother Lewis according to the information I have. And Lewis was married to Mary Elizabeth Stout in 1860 in Washington Co., OH. Notice Lewis' mother-in-law is named Elizabeth Stout in the 1880 Ritchie Co., WV census. Lewis named two of his children after brothers - John and Jacob.

Have you checked for a Ritchie County, WV will or estate settlement John Congleton? It may list all of his children if he was married twice. Have you checked for a Ritchie County, WV deed? It could give you some valuable information and may list his wife. When I checked for Martha (Farley) and John Congleton in the 1870 Liberty Twp., Washington Co., OH census, I found Matilda J. Cantwell living next to them. Matilda married my direct ancestor, Kingsbury Covey II, in 1885. She was his second wife. Matilda Farley Swaney Covey (1855-1907) is also buried in Lehigh / Fifteen Cemetery. She was the daughter of Mary Jane Farley (1837-1924) and Joseph Madison Cantwell (1838-1862). I was unable to locate John Congleton (b. 1842) in the 1880 census.

Alfred married an Anna Boston in 1895 in Washington Co, Ohio and he is buried in Eastlawn/Valley Cemetery in Washington Co, Ohio. Anyway I did not know for sure if the John Congleton in Ritchie Co, WVA is the same John that was in Washington Co, Ohio in earlier census records and someone at Ancestry had that they were the same ones, but in one of the census records-I think the 1870 one--John's middle initi! al is "J". On June 29, 1884 Dolly Congleton married William H. Snodgrass (1858-1935), the son of Mary Evilsizer and George Snodgrass. Dolly Snodgrass died March 3, 1885 in Washington County after giving birth to Henry Snodgrass (February 25, 1885 - March 1, 1885). It has been reported that William H. Snodgrass refused to care for his stepchildren so they ended up in an orphanage. If this is true, the Washington County Children's Home would probably have a record. According to correspondence with Mrs. William Herbert Snodgrass of Parkersburg, WV, William H. Snodgrass married Harriett Barker on September 11, 1885 and later Mattie Vie Jacobs (1887-1970). Mattie is listed as his wife on William Snodgrass' death record on May 10, 1935 in Washington County, OH.
