Hello, I have a new genealogy website available. It's mostly central West Virginia families. It's updated generally once a week with additional information. It is free but you need to register to see the full details of your searches. If you see anything that is incorrect or you have additional information please let me know. https://lockhartbooks.com/genealogy/index.php Gerry Lockhart
Hello I'm working on my genealogy and have gotten stuck on the connection between Phillip David Cox Sr (1819-1860 - married to Catharine Marks) who my research shows was the son of David Sutton Cox and Hannah Tharp (who had been married to John Eslick - which has many spellings). I have really run into some huge roadblocks and hope you might be able to help. I ran into a partial copy of an article by Janet Waite in 1999 (Our Proud Heritage part 3) where she briefly mentions David Sutton and his family connections, but I didn't see any source materials for the article. Are there any independent sources on him (outside personal genealogies)? Also, do you have any information that might connect David Sutton to Phillip David? If not, could you direct me to someone that might? I have been to most of the obvious and many of the obscure sources out there without any luck. At this point, I have about a 50 page summary of all the various sources I can find - but none of them definitive by any measure. Several come close, including this article, but sourcing is everything. Appreciate anything you can do. Dave Cox

Census records only record where a person was born - state or country. 1940 is the last available census at this time. I can't believe there is not some relationship between your James Harrison Merchant and my James Tilden Merchant. Cousins maybe? James Tilden (1813-1886) lived in Middleway with his first wife, Matilda Bennett. They had 5 children. Matilda died in 1850 and he married Sarah Jane Foster in 1854. About that time they moved to Cairo in Ritchie County and established the Alpha Hotel. He went on to have 5 more children with Sarah Jane. James' parents are listed on his death record as Edwin and Elizabeth. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. I have learned James Harrison Merchant is not the father of my William Henry Merchant. William's father is George Washington Merchant. I am still trying to learn the exact relationship between the James Merchant of Ritchie County and my ancestor William Henry Merchant. They both have ties to Middleway, Jefferson County, Virginia and Ritchie County, West Virginia. I suspect they are uncle and nephew or maybe cousins. Thanks for the help. Step children are not enumerated as "step" children Adopted children are not enumerated as "adopted" Grand children are not enumerated as "grand children" Orphaned children were not enumerated as "orphan" Immigration date is not recorded 1850 is the 1st census that shows all family members with their birthplaces 1880 is the 1st census that shows parental birthplaces and family relationships Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. After about 30 years of research on the Hudkins family, I have NEVER heard of a Bennett Hudkins born in 1729. Perhaps you have some information I have not seen. The first Bennett Hudkins was born ca1754. The Hudkins named spelled in this manner first appears about 1802 in what is now West Virginia.
