Lillian in Oregon route on Saturday --- > Hi, Can anyone tell me if Harrison Co WV has a Visitor Center? I am planning a research trip to Harrison Co. WV and am in need of visitor information, including a Harrison County map, and accommodations. Thank you, Lillian in Oregon Hello Lillian, A good place to get a map and information is at the Chamber of Commerce at 348 W. Main Street in Clarksburg. This street is a one way street running west to east (the matching street is Pike Street). Their phone number is 304-624-6331. They can get you a map of the area and so can most businesses. The Harrison County Courthouse is located on 301 W. Main Street (almost directly across the street from the Chamber). Parking can sometimes be a problem near to the courthouse, so wear some walking shoes because you may have to walk a few blocks. Don't plan on getting curbside parking nearby. There is an automated parking lot behind the courthouse but it is a little pricey. There are several pay parking lots and one parking garage within a four block radius. I personally avoid the garage because all of the lower levels are leased out and visitors have to park on the top two levels. The terrain around the courthouse is hilly.but not overly steep. The Clarksburg Public Library has a good local & regional reference library. It is located at 404 W. Pike Street. There phone number is 304-624-6512. The collection is located in an old mansion nicknamed the "Waldomore". The keeper of the materials is named David and he is very knowledgeable & helpful. I know that there are hours most days (except Sunday), but I do not know what the specifics are. Some of the hours are staffed by volunteers and some are by David personally. This is a good place to start. All of the hotels are located along interstate I-79 and may have either a Clarksburg or a Bridgeport address. Clarksburg is on the west side of the interstate and Bridgeport is on the east. There is a Hampton, a Holiday Inn, a few others as well as some bed and breakfasts. There is a bed and breakfast on E. Main Street that looks nice from the outside (never been in it) within a mile (or less) of the Chamber, the Library and the Courthouse. I can't think of what it is called now and if you walk it is down a hill then up a hill. The Chamber of Commerce can give you a current listing. You may have trouble booking some weekends due to local football games if you come in the fall. There is a regional airport in Bridgeport ("Clarksburg - Bridgeport Benedum Airport") with US Air commuter service. However, it has a limited number of flights (I think 3 - 4 per day) and flights in or out. Many people (myself included), will drive to Pittsburgh, PA or Charleston, WV (about 2 hours) or to Columbus, OH (about 3 1/2 hours) to catch a flight. It is a lot cheaper and usually not really longer in time when you consider the layovers waiting for the commuter plane. Hope that this helps, Mark Moeser [email protected]
