I have no idea how to search for my WOLFORD'S in Randolph Co. (If that's where they were!) What I know, and how: My great-grandfather was Calvin WOLFORD. (My grandpa told me so!) He was born in Dry Fork, VA (now WV), Oct 24, 1858. His death cert (Lincoln, NE, 1940) said so. And it's "family history". His uncle was Thomas WOLFORD. The 1880 census shows Cal in Thomas' household in Iowa...relationship...nephew. Also "family history". His father's name was John WOLFORD. This was the name he gave on his marriage application, 1892, Saunders Co, NE. (The only record I have of his father's name...anywhere!) His mother and his aunt (Thomas' wife) were sisters...Caroline Hill (Mom) and Mary Jane Hill (aunt). Family history again. But seems to be supported by the 1850 census, where Caroline Hill and Mary Jane Hill are in the same household in Pendleton Co, VA. And the ages match other census records and death records found in Iowa. His grandfather's name was Abraham WOLFORD. Inferred from Thomas WOLFORD's death record in Iowa. Info was given by a "friend", so who knows! Cal and Caroline are in the 1860 census for Cadiz, Harrison Co, OH, as are Thomas, Mary Jane, and their kids. No dad in sight. Can't find Cal and Caroline in the 1870 Poweshiek Co, IA, census, although I find Thomas and Mary Jane. The 1880 census has Caroline as a housekeeper, and Cal living with Uncle Thomas. (Still in Poweshiek Co, IA) By 1900, Cal has moved to Nebraska, married, and is the father of 3 children. I'm not too worried about 1860 on. I know that Cal's mom remarried in Ohio and the family, including Thomas, moved to Iowa. Yes, I'd like to know why Cal moved to Nebraska, but at this point, it's not as important as placing Thomas and John in a family in VA/WV. The "Deep River Centennial History", Poweshiek Co, IA, says that Thomas WOLFORD and Mary Jane HILL were married in Hardy Co, VA, in 1853. I have been unable to verify this. What Church records might be available? Are there some which might not have been filmed by the LDS? Any local volunteers for look-ups? Do I have to plan a trip to WV? (This wouldn't be a BAD thing!)
