Nebraska, at the end of the Civil War, was opening up to farmers. My ancestor, John Wolford, son of Martin Wolford and Sally Harman, moved his family from Tipton County, Indiana, to Clay County, Nebraska. His future daughter-in-law, Delia Briggs was there with her parents and siblings. They came from England! Talk about a culture shock for Englishmen! My guess is that Cal heard land was available and some parts were working out well. HOW he heard about the land is a guess. Who knows--maybe he wrote to his cousin John. (Pure speculation on my part there.) You'll have seen my reply to your first post. And thanks for your responses. HOW Cal decided to move to Nebraska, I don't know. WHY he decided to move I can make a guess at. From what my uncle (Cal's grandson) has told me, from what he heard from my grandfather, there was some "step-child" syndrome after Caroline remarried. Her husband had about 5 kids from his first marriage, then he and Caroline had 2 daughters. Then he died (about 1869, after they had moved to Iowa). I speculate that times were tough...Caroline is a housekeeper in another, totally (as far as I know) unrelated, household in 1880. Also in 1880, I've found one of her daughters from the 2nd marriage living with one of her 1/2 brothers, and, of course, Cal is living with his Uncle Tom. I think he didn't feel any close family ties with the steps or the halfs, felt like he didn't belong anywhere, and moved on to create his own life. Although his mom was still living, he was basically an orphan. Too much speculation? Maybe. Will we ever know? Probably not.
