Diane, We've been in touch before, and I certainly have appreciated your information and expertise. Since this John was still in WV after 1860 (when Caroline and Cal were in OH with Tom and Mary Jane), it doesn't seem likely that this is the right "Abraham/John" line. Oh, I've made up WILD stories to account for it...Caroline and her husband were never married, she just took on the Wolford name...That's why she, Tom and Mary Jane left WV, to escape the "shame". But that's just my active imagination taking over! If Calvin was his middle name, he never, ever, disclosed his first name...he was Calvin in 1860 and remained so through each census, on his marriage license and through his death cert. I just think this is a line of "lost" Wolfords. All of the adults were illiterate. Caroline applied for her Civil War Widow's pension (through 2nd husband) and signed with an "x". Tom witnessed for her, also signing with an "x". So no nice chatty letters home about the kids and the crops! For all I know, Cal wasn't even born in Dry Fork! Again, it's family history, and the only time the place is mentioned is on his death cert. On the census records, his place of birth is sometimes given as Ohio. I loved my Grandpa Bill Wolford (Cal's son) unreservedly. He loved children, he was smart and funny and patient. But this flippin' family is makin' me nuts! I'm not actually even positive that John was Cal's dad's name. I assume so, because that's the name Cal gave on the marriage license application. And he gave his mother's name correctly. But if he only knew what he was "told" there could be a major error there! Oh help. The bottom line is...Cal, Caroline, and Whoever...are shrouded in mystery, and I may never find out the "truth". ----- Original Message ----- From: <SnowBeri@aol.com> To: <WVRANDOL-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, October 08, 2002 3:28 PM Subject: Re: [WVRANDOL-L] Wolford > I don't have a Calvin Wolford in my database, but I am wondering if Calvin is > his middle name...and he was went by that.
