    3. Greetings veterans and newbies of the rootsweb. I would like tell you there are some really great folks who are willing to help just for the asking. I, myself do Volunteer research at Andersonville Civil War Prison in Andersonville Georgia. There are Any research I do is absolutely at NO cost and I am willing to do what I can. There are 417 prisoners on record from your state and more than 256 West Virginia or Virginia Union who died here, I thought I would send my offer. As Virginia was one of the states that was torn apart and was truley brother against brother,,I feel the need to say I am not in anyway trying to focus on the horrors of Andersonville compared to any POW camp in the north ..( i.e.Elmira ) or any others and do not wish to stir up arguments on this site. My focus is dedicated to ALL of those held prisoner during this war , on both sides. I just happen to be near Andersonville so this is where I do my work. Here are my sources of research. There are 2 online databases to do lookups.....One by name...one by Company and Regiment. I also have a copy of the Dorence Atwater Death list which has the names and grave numbers of 12960 graves with only 460 marked as " UNKNOWN " This along with a CD I have which contains 34,000 names of the 45,000 who were imprisoned there which helps me find prisoner records because of misspellings of the names or alternate names. I visit the prison site every couple of weeks and have access to the onsite databases as well as the physical files. I would like to let you know of another service I offer which is to take photos of graves for a small fee. Please do not consider this spam as my research offer is FREE for the asking and will be posted on this county site only once. If there is anything I can do in helping your research at Andersonville, please just ask. Please visit my website dedicated to those Americans who were imprisoned and died in captivity while in the service to our country Kevn Frye Local Andersonville Historian / National Park Service Volunteer http://www.angelfire.com/ga2/Andersonvilleprison/index.html AOL USERS go to http://hometown.aol.com/andersonvillecw/

    3. Kevin, THANK YOU my husband had a cousin who was there. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - DIGGING YOUR ROOTS By: Anne (Devine) Hurst - Columnist For THE WEST UNION NEWSPAPER,THE HERALD RECORD DATED MARCH 13, 1979 STORY TOLD BY: JIM HUSK The following is an excerpt from Mrs. Hurst's Colum in the West Union newspaper, The Herald Record, dated March 13, 1979. Speaking of which leads me to the Interesting Civil War data and Story Jim Husk gave me a few weeks ago. You remember we did an article on Jim's family last year. He's a History Buff and has been doing some interesting didding, but I'll let him speak for himself. I'm giving this as a Partial Record of My Great-Uncle George W. Husk, who volunteered his services for the Civil War when he was Nineteen Years Old. My origin is from Morgan's Run at Harlen. I'm the Grandson of Bob Davisson. My mother was Ida Esther (Davisson) Husk. My Grandfather was John Husk, The brother of the George W. Husk in this article. When George volunteered for the Civil War his mother was very much opposed to it. George didn't say any more about it but one day when he was going around the hill, supposedly to get a bucket of water, he met my grandfather (his brother John) who was about six years of age at that time. George gave the bucket to my grandpa Davisson, gave him a nickle, and said, "Now John, go on home with the water, I'm gonna slip down over the hill and I'm gonna be gone for a while," and as the records so indicate he died in a Prisoner-of-War Camp in Georiga. The man Starved to Death! All of his mustering out records are so printed and his service record shows this too. His dad and mother applied for his pension and did receive a small amount. Thank You, Jim, for sharing this story. this area is so rich in history and the only way to preserve it is to get it in print. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------- Gloria Jean (Powers) Husk, 114 Arizona Street, Carrabelle, Fl. 32322 Surnames:Husk,Critchfield,Bissell,Wilson,Riffle,Helmick,Cox,Palmer, Dennis,Powers,White,Stout,Teter,McCally,Norton,Privett,Harris,Morris, Wyatt,Bennett,Sandlin,Woods,Karickhoff,Lantz,Casto,Rohr,Cooper Powers & Husk Families http://www.gloryway.com & My book: "Love Always:Glory's Way" search for Gloria Jean Powers at: http://www.booksamillion.com/ plus many others.
