Looking for the marriage date of Patrick Divine and Margaret Osborn in Randolph Co. Also for Philip Osborn and Ruth Ware if available. Someone was kind enough to send it to me before but my old computer crashed and took the dates with it. Thanks so much! Cindy G.
This was taken from the Petro genforum, it seems to say that the Petro's were German or French (Alsace, Lorraine) and changed the name from Peterri to Petro....I don't know if that is true, any Petro descendant have the facts? "I have also seen this at a LDS family History center near where I live. They have it in with their family CD's that I looked through. Philip Peterri had 2 sons 1.Philip born 1718 Palitinate,Alsace Germany d. Rockbridge Co. VA 2. Johann Bernhardt Petro Peterri b.1722-1723 Alsace,Lorraine France d.1813 Warren co. OH. Johann dropped the Peterri name and began using his 2nd middle name Petro. He was maried to Mary Starn." ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jean Loudin" <jloudin@rtol.net> To: <WVRANDOL-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Saturday, March 23, 2002 10:21 AM Subject: Re: [WVRANDOL-L] HENRY PETRO KITTLE > It just is not only about accepting other people's research. It just is not only about accepting other people's research. Any genealogist needs to get into the history of the United States, otherwise you can be fooled. To track a family or to get an idea of how they might of moved or why, one has to know the history of the states. During the French and Indian War a lot of residents of what is now eastern WV fled to other areas, some as far as the Carolinas. Then some of the family would come back and some of the family would stay where they had run to. Finding migration routes commonly used can often lead to where a family member came from. I have seen again and again people saying that persons living in the 1700s and 1800s did not travel much. That is simply not true. They traveled, took their animals to market on the east coast, went there for supplies, gathered for big camp meetings and would travel 100 miles for these and stay a week or two. They visited each other, but not a short overnight visit, it might be for 2 weeks. This is how many ladies met their husbands and these husbands were not in their home neighborhoods. Also we look at today's maps and the roads and think people lived a long distance apart, not so in WV. Back in the 1800s it was shorter to go up one mountain and down the other by horseback and essentially these people were practically neighbors. If you find an old church, draw a circle around it. People within that circle rode in for services and not by today's roads. In lower Randolph there were not even wagon roads until late as no one needed them until they bought horses and carriages. I have often wondered where the Petro came from. Was he off a ship? It is odd for someone not familiar with frontier life to end up on the frontier when it was hard to survive if you dis not have experiences of hunting, trapping, etc. And was it Petro or Pedro? I remember one of the family was captured by the indians and killed according to tradition. Jean
Thanks, Jean. That's why I made sure to point out that I had not done any original research on these names. I know the dangers of accepting other people's research at face value without seeing original documents! Jean, Sandra, Rebecca, Gloria and Cindy, Thanks for your leads on Henry and I have checked them ALL out. IF and WHEN I find anything on Henry I will post it to the list. Again, thanks Ethel
Dear Ethel, My GGG-grandmother was Christina Petro. Her father was Henry Petro (b. abt. 1763 in Randolph County, [W.] Va. and d. aft. 1833 in [W.]Va.). Her mother was Elizabeth Ann Ke[i]ttle (b. abt. 1755 in Randolph County, [W.]Va. and d. Jan. 7, 1834, place unknown). Henry Petro's father was Nicholas Peadro [Petro?] (b. abt. 1736 in Randolph County). Nicholas' father was ??? Peadro (b. 1703 in Randolph County) Elizabeth Ann Kettle's father was Abraham Kittle (b. Jan. 1, 1730/31 in Rochester, Ulster County New York or New Jersey, m. Aug. 30, 1754, d. Sept. 16, 1815 in Randolph County). Her mother was Christina Westfall (b. bef. 1738 in Ulster County, New York, d. bef. 1805 in Randolph County, VA). Much of this information came from the Don Norman files and other published data. I don't have the original documentation for this line but I've never seen it challenged. Obviously, I don't have your Henry Petro Kittle, but I can't imagine that he is not connected to this group in some way. I hope this helps - contact me if you think I might be able to help you further. Susannah Walker's parents may be a George and a Sarah. I got that from another individual, so I really don't know and I have no other information on them. I do have that she was born Dec. 11, 1781 in Randolph co. Va and died Aug. 6, 1867. That is about it, if anyone knows anything about these Walkers I would really like to know. Thanks. Another thing Ethel, I have found bound out and adopted out records in, of all places, the deed books in the County Clerk's office for that time period. Worth a look. Hope for a deed record. It was literaly years before I found the Riffle deed that named my George Wilson's wife. Jacob died in 1818 and this deed sorting out the land was in 1832, it can be a long time before land is settled. I know of one estate here in Braxton where the guy died in 1904 and they have never settled the thing. There must be over a 1000 heirs by now. Jean
Ethel, Have you checked the deeds? Where did father's land go? When was it divided? Might find the connection there--be sure to check to 20-30 years past date of death of father, and/or mother. Jean
I have Jacob Kittle born 1831, Roaring Creek, Randolph co.
