New Webster County Cemetery Book available For three years Michael Henline has been traveling back country roads, searching through record books at the courthouse, and interviewing county residents in an effort to identify and record Webster County cemeteries. He has obtained the cooperation of numerous researchers and previously published authors to compile the most extensive and thorough study of Webster County cemeteries to date. This material is presented in two different formats, a CD version for computers and the traditional book form. The book is 230 pages long and contains transcriptions of 129 cemeteries, plus 25 pages of maps showing the approximate locations of over 250 Webster County cemeteries. It is estimated that the book contains in excess of four thousand burials. The Cds contain the same information as the book plus an additional six thousand names from the John Reed burial files, which lists burials from 1937-1995. The CDs are searchable with any computer word processing program, which makes finding your ancestor and where they are buried a snap. This book includes all the cemeteries and notes published by Ron Hardway in his two volumes, 'Historic Cemeteries of Webster County' (which were published in the early 1980's and are out of print and nearly impossible to find). It also includes most of the cemeteries published by Stanley Anderson in 'Cemeteries of Northern Webster County' taken from the 1978 edition of his book. In addition to the previously published work contributed by these two authors there are also cemeteries transcribed by about a half dozen other researchers. This book is more than just recording the information on tombstones, not only did researchers visit cemeteries and record the tombstones but in many instances personal intervies and records searchers were performed to determine the identities of people in unmarked graves. Some cemeteries have biographical notes attached, to further identify the people and help put them in historical perspective. The following people made significant contributions to this project. Mary COLLETT WYATT, (1779-31 May 1834), wife of Edmund Wyatt NOTES: 1. The above listings include both marked and unmarked graves from all known sources. A few are followed by question marks, which indicates that some speculation is involved in putting them on this list. Any errors or discrepancies should be brought to the attention of William H. Rice, P.O. Box 303, Elkins, WV 26241. 2. Abraham Kittle, Senior and Michael Wees, both died before 28 September 1818 when the tract where the cemetery is located was purchased by the deacons of the Regular Baptist Church for $40.00 from Henry and Elizabeth Petro. While the Meeting House was already built on the tract according to the deed there is no mention of the cemetery. Abraham Kittle, Senior is more likely to be buried in the cemetery on his home place at Sullivans Crossing about two miles northwest of Arnold Hill. The WPA canvass also lists him at Sullivans Crossing. Michael Wees, on the other hand, died in 1813 and was more likely buried on his homeplace on the Cheat River. (William H. Rice) 3. There are far more graves in the cemetery than I have names on my list and I keep learning of new people to include on it. Since I made my list in 1993 Ive had access to additional sources of information and talked to people who have family members in the cemetery and am confident that the named persons are also buried in Arnold Hill Cemetery. I am just wondering if that Margaret is the same one later listed being married to that particular Adam Roy. I have two Adam Roys born in about the same segment of time. And I have literally 5 different Margaret Carr's. (Margaret being a popular name in the 1800s) As careful as Kensel is, there are some errors in his book. When you're dealing with common names like John, etc, esp Jr and Sr and all the cousins and nephews having same name, it's VERY easy to make a mistake. Hi Diane. I looked in my book Beright Cousins by Kensel E. Stpehens and he has the same info as you do pertaining to who are the parents of Margaret Carr being Joab Carr and Lucretia Bright. Robin in Lakeland.
Margaret is a very common name. I just want to make sure I have the right wife to the right husband. I have Adam Roy (middle initial hard to read in documents. It can be either Adam R Roy or Adam K Roy). Adam was born 1850, son of Simon K Roy (b Mar 1827 died ??) and Sidney Pennington (1827-1901) from Randolph County. I also have Margaret Carr (actually MANY Margaret Carrs!) b. 1853 or 1852 (depending on source) died 1925, married in Tucker County Sep 1872. Margaret's parents are Joab L Carr (1824-1903) and Lucretia Bright (1827-1903). Is this the right Adam and right Margaret? Did they have children? Anita " I hope this helps" does not begin to tell you that this information has hit me beyond my wildest dreams, I can be obsessive about minute details, this adds great color to the lives of my grand mother Luella Hicks Tyler (born at Cherry Hebert Ranch )and her parents who I am sure lived there for a short time she was the second child of seven and the only one born away from Elkins, Randolph, VA-WV Also, I had heard that some of the books containing profiles charged for them. Hello Henry I am seeking the death dates of three Tyler babies or children but I am going on a hunch they might be in Summit county,OH The family story is that My grandmother lost a set of twins Mildred and Willard soon after they were born my Aunt Edna was born in Akron in 1919 and before her my Uncle James was born in Elkins ,West Virginia 1913. And from the spacing of the others I figure that the three births had to have occurred between 1913 to 1919 the third birth was that of her little 5 year old daughter Genevieve Tyler so, Tyler Mildred (twin) infant Tyler Willard (twin) infant Tyler Genevieve ( died at 5 years old) I will be sending this same query to the Elkins volunteer and I hope that does not violate RAOGK rules Thank you very much for being a volunteer as I am unable to find a volunteer for Randolph county, WV, I am sending a copy of this letter to the Randolph county mailing list I am not sure if these records can be found in birth or death list for Randolph county, but I am hoping to solve my years old mystery SANDRA TYLER DUNCAN Sacramento,CA http://www.progenealogists.com/genealogysleuthb.htm Scanned by Norton
I have four siblings: Jesse Carr b 1863; Elizabeth Carr b 1873; Enos "Bud" Carr b 1874; Mary Carr b. 1878. Does anyone know the parents of them? I was told they once were the children of John Carr but I have his death date as 1861. Hi Gang, Earlier I had requested anything to prove the relationship between John "Jan" Kittle and his son, Henry Petro Kittle in order to help a friend with her application for DAR. Well, here is what we found and have sent it on to the DAR in hopes they will accept it. The line I'm speaking of goes like this: Abraham Kittle, Revolutionary Soldier (Will Book, Randolph County, Book 2, page 31) John "Jan" Kittle (Deed Book, Randolph County, Book 2, page 2) Henry Petro Kittle (See the notes below) Jacob H. Kittle (Randolph County Census 1850 & 1860) Lewis C. Kittle (Death Certificate) Harvey Gay Kittle (Birth Certificate) Elva Pearl Kittle Gainer (Death Certificate) NOTE: I have checked the following Randolph County, WV Records for Henry P. Kittle: 1) Deeds 2) Wills 3) Marriage Records 4) Birth Records 5) Death Records 6) Land Records 7) Census Records I could find no records, with the exception of the Census of Randolph County, VA/WV. In the 1850 Randolph County Census V201, Henry P. Kittle is listed without a spouse, but he has in his home, Smith Kittle, Mary Kittle, James and LaFayette. Smith Kittle is presumed to be Henry's son, Mary his daughter in law, and 2 grandchildren. George and Jacob Kittle, assumed to be Henry P. Kittle's sons, are listed adjacent. In the 1860 Randolph County Census, Henry P. Kittle is in the household of Jacob and Jane Kittle, with 5 children. Smith Kittle is listed adjacent. In the 1870 Randolph County Census, Henry P. Kittle is in the household of Oliver and Rebecca Scott. It is assumed that Smith Kittle, Jacob Kittle and Rebecca Scott are the children of Henry P. Kittle and wife, Nancy (Unknown). I hope this explains Henry and thanks to all who offered help and information. Ethel
Robert Cunningham is shown as the spouse of Prudence Parsons in the Virginia Parson McCabe genealogy titled PARSONS Family History and Record, published in 1913, page 19. I have a photocopy of that page and a few others that I made at the WV Archives in Charleston. Unfortunately at the time I made the copies I wasn't aware of my Cunningham connection and made the copy for other information on the page. I don't know if that book has more information on the descendants of Robert Cunningham and Prudence Parsons. I surmised the date of their marriage as being "before 1772" because the will of her father, Thomas Parsons (born about 1687 in England) was dated 5/27/1771 and recorded 3/10/1772. In the will he leaves proceeds of the sale of his property to (among others) his daughter Prudence and son-in-law Robert Cunningham. You can find lots of information about Robert Cunningham at Rootsweb. Hopes this helps. Let me know if you need more. --Dick Ross -----Original Message----- From: Sandra E. T. Karen, you didn't give much to go on. The Skidmore family is rather large. If you post some dates for your Thomas and Elijah I'm sure someone will be better able to help you. My only Skidmore was James S. Skidmore (b. 8/16/1784), the second husband of Prudence Graham Kuykendall. He died in 1860 while living in Randolph county but I don't know the exact date or where he is buried. Prudence died 11/21/1879 in Upshur County and is buried in Ross Cemetery in southern Upshur County near Randolph County. By the way, Prudence Graham's mother was Nancy Cunningham (b. 12/16/1767), the daughter of Robert Cunningham and Prudence Parsons. I'd welcome any comment/information on Robert Cunningham. Anna Wolford, b 11 Nov 1799, married Eli Walker on 11 Aug 1829 in Randolph County, WV. (Anna's father, John, had land in what would become later Tucker County, WV) Anna and Eli moved to Des Moines County, Iowa and had children Isaac, John, Emily, Enos, Malinda, Phoebe. Eli also appears to have a daughter from a previous marriage. Her name is Elizabeth, born somewhere around 1825-27. Anyone know who Eli was married to before Anna? I have more info on Anna's siblings and their children if anyone wants to exchange info on what happened to Anna and Eli's descendants. I have some on their descendants but always looking for more. <<There was a time I was speculating that Jacob Snider of Pendleton had married a Susannah Hoover. I searched the deeds, asked others to look for evidence, but once in a misguided missive I put her down as a Hoover in ( ) and with a question mark. >> I have a Snider/Snyder mix, also. (Depends on what source, you find it spelled both ways.) I have Elizabeth Snider/Snyder b. about 1837 married to Malan Wolford in Randolph County, WV, on 29 Dec 1853. Elizabeth's father is listed as John Snider (Lots of John Snyder/Snider, of course!), and Malan's parents are listed as John Wolford and Frances Thompson. I have more on the Wolford line of Randolph County.
