    2. My address is Bonnie Fretwell, 912 Northwood Drive, Virginia Beach, VA 23452. I hope to get up to Randolph County this August for a White family reunion (descendants of Levi and Mary Ann's son James who had 10 children), and have enough time to do some research while I'm there. Thanks,

    2. Gloria Jean Husk
    3. THE HISTORY OF ALPENA Helen Senic with Angie Phillips http://www.swcp.com/~dhickman/journals/V4I2/alpena.html ALPENA! Yes, Alpena, West Virginia! To think of it . . . to know it . . . to leave and come back to it . . . Ah! to live in it . . . that is best of all! "Time has made a change in the old home place." The words of this old familiar song certainly remind me of the Alpena I have known. Alpena has not always been Alpena. In fact, it was not even named until 1879. But there were people here, lives being lived. Some of those lives were being lived by American Indians. We are sure of this because Mr. E.C. Wyatt found and marked the grave site OT Peter Shaver who was killed by Indians. The grave site can still be seen along the road as you travel from Alpena south to Glady. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------- Gloria Jean (Powers) Husk, 114 Arizona Street, Carrabelle, Fl. 32322 Surnames:Husk,Critchfield,Bissell,Wilson,Riffle,Helmick,Cox,Palmer, Dennis,Powers,White,Stout,Teter,McCally,Norton,Privett,Harris,Morris, Wyatt,Bennett,Sandlin,Woods,Karickhoff,Lantz,Casto,Rohr,Cooper Powers & Husk Families listed at: http://www.gloryway.com

    2. Hello Bonnie, Send me your snail mail and here is mine Robin Kesling, 5935 Chaps Dr, Lakeland, Fl 33813. I will be happy to share with you . Thanks for what you already sent. Some of the info may have come from E C Wyatt. He wrote articles for the newspaper in Elkins, Wv. He did family genealogies for familys from Job, Harmon, Wymer and several places there in the Mts. He knew most of the people he wrote about. Even when I went to the mountains to visit the family said to go see E C he could tell me alot about the family. I did do that to. I know he did several White genealogies. Well it is late and I am up past my bedtime . I hope to hear from you soon. Robin in Lakeland.

    1. Re: [WVRANDOL-L] Soldier White--Clarksburg Exponent-Telegram
    2. Hi Robin. What a great story! I am descended from Soldier White through his son Levi. Randolph County marriage records show that Thomas White married Mary Rains on August 28, 1821. Thomas White also married Lucy Raines on May 29, 1830. I don't know the connection between Mary and Lucy or who the parents were of either of them. Levi was born in about 1828 (he gives his age as 22 in the 1850 census; as 32 in the 1860 census; as 42 in the 1870 census; and as 52 in the 1880 census), which is why I believe his mother was Mary Rains. Soldier and Lucy Raines were married until his death on June 15, 1883. Lucy died May 26, 1884. They had 4 children that I know of. I do have a lot of information on the White family. Some of it is well-documented, but I'm not sure where some of it originated and don't know if it is 100% accurate. However, I would be happy to send you what I have. Much of it is not in the computer so it will have to be send snail mail. If you send me your address, I will be happy to send it. I would love to have copies of the information you have. If you need my mailing address, please let me know. Bonnie

    2. Hello list, My husbands line is from Martha Patty White who wed Eli Carr. Martha Patty was a sister of Thomas E Soldier White . I have Thomas as married ot Lucy Raines. Is this what the rest of you have ? Eli Carr is my husbands Great Great Grandad and his son Solomon who wed Susanna Simmons is he Great Grandparents. Solomon later owned and operated the Joseph White Grist Mill . Emanuel White drowned at this site: Solomon and Susanna Simmon Carr has Flernoy Bernard Allen Patton Carr who wed Cora Bell Douglas. This is my husbands Grandparents. Solomon in the 1850 census was listed as a mulatto . This is due to the Native American blood in the White line. Eli Carr ran off with a Flanagan woman and they had a cabin in the woods they were found by her husband and son and Eli was shot and she had her throat slit and they also killed the baby and then burned the cabin down on them. This Flanagan man was John Flanagan Sr and his son Jacob Flanagan . They were never prosecuted as they made their own laws back then. I made contact with older family members in Job and Harmon back in the 70's . I have been researching this line off and on for 30 yrs. I have a partial history done by Mr E C Wyatt on the White family. If I can be of help to anyone just e-mail me. Robin in Lakeland, Fl

    1. Re: [WVRANDOL-L] Soldier White--Clarksburg Exponent-Telegram
    2. Clarksburg Telegram Exponent 3/01 Once, Long Ago by Gerald D. Swick Remember the Associated Press story from last November about a woman named Kimberly Ward from Hix, WV, who shot an eight-point buck from her kitchen window while her husband was freezing ni the woods, vainly hoping to bag a deer? Guys hate when that happens. A not-dissimiliar story comes to us from the pen of David Hunter Strother, an author illustrator who won fame writing for "Harper's New Monthly Magazine" under the name "Porte Crayon" back around the time of the Late Unpleasantness. A native of Martinsburg, many of his pieces were accounts of people he met in the Appalachian Mountains. This particular adventure was reprinted in "A History of Randolph County West Virginia From its Earliest Exploration and Settlement to the Present Time," by Dr. A.S. Bosworth (McClain Printing Co., Reprinted 1975). "Porte" and a traveling companion stopped for the night at a two-story, six room log cabin at Dry Fork on the road between Seneca and Beverly. It was the home of a fellow known as "Soldier" White--no one including White was quite certain how he had earned that nickname--and served as a sort of inn for cattle drovers and other travelers. Also residing in the house was White's lovely daughter, Martha. Porte described her as "rising of sixteen," so it is tempting to say she was in the flour of her youth, but we're not talking about that Martha White, okay? Bad puns aside, she apparently was a mountain flower, lovely as rhodedendron blossoms in a shaft of morning sunlight. Porte Crayone described her as "A sparkling brunette, lithe and graceful as a fawn, she is also, from the habit of meeting st rangers, more affable in her manners than most of her mountain cousins." Now there is just something about being in the moutains that sets a man's stomach a-hungrying for trout. Porte and his companion, the Major, asked if the lovely Martha understood cooking trout. "You'd better catch a mess first and try me," she responded, suggesting they might have good luck below the mill. Soon, the two men were happily drowing worms below the aforesaid mill. Martha was right about the fishing being good. Time and again, they cast their lines and pulled in small-or medium-sized fish. They were getting enough for a good fry, but that wasn't good enough. In the clear moutain stream, they saw titanic trout lying among the rocks, laughing at them. The fishermen offered a veritale smorgasboard of baits to these leviathans, only to watch in fristration as their quarry glided out from the boulders, rubbed a nose against the hook and returned to their resting spot with a look that distinctly said, you gotta be kidding. Pretty soon, Porte and the Major saw the lovely Martha wendering her way to the stream, holding a hickory wand with a horse-hair noose on its end. Smiling sweetly, she asked them to refrain from casting for awhile. Catlike, she crept over the rocks to where one of the finned monarchs of the river lay dreaming in the shadowns. She gradually slipped the noose into the water and slowly drew it toward the giant fish. The horse hair touched one of his fins, and he hesitately retreated half his length, apparently undecided about what had disturbed him. Moments later, Martha clarified the situation for him, looping her noose about him and yanking him from the stream. The men applauded, but she motioned them to be quiet. Three more times she noosed large fish that had avoided their hooks. One weighted in at two-and-a-half pounds. Martha attempted to show her guests how to use the horse hair noose, but they couldn't get the, ah, hang of it. To her credit, she not only refrained from chanting "Nanner-nanner boo-boo" at ther hapless attempts, she fried up the trout-brown as fritters-for their supper.

    1. [WVRANDOL-L] Webster County Cemetery Book
    2. michael henline
    3. For three years Michael Henline has been traveling back country roads, searching through record books at the courthouse, and interviewing county residents in an effort to identify and record Webster County cemeteries. He has obtained the cooperation of numerous researchers and previously published authors to compile the most extensive and thorough study of Webster County cemeteries to date. This material is presented in two different formats, a CD version for computers and the traditional book form. The book is 230 pages long and contains transcriptions of 129 cemeteries, plus 25 pages of maps showing the approximate locations of over 250 Webster County cemeteries. It is estimated that the book contains in excess of four thousand burials. The Cd contains the same information as the book plus an additional six thousand names from the John Reed burial files, which lists burials from 1937-1995. The CDs are searchable with any computer word processing program, which makes finding your ancestor and where they are buried a snap. This book includes all the cemeteries and notes published by Ron Hardway in his two volumes, 'Historic Cemeteries of Webster County' (which were published in the early 1980's and are out of print and nearly impossible to find). It also includes most of the cemeteries published by Stanley Anderson in 'Cemeteries of Northern Webster County' taken from the 1978 edition of his book. In addition to the previously published work contributed by these two authors there are also cemeteries transcribed by about a half dozen other researchers. This book is more than just recording the information on tombstones, not only did researchers visit cemeteries and record the tombstones but in many instances personal intervies and records searches were performed to determine the identities of people in unmarked graves. Some cemeteries have biographical notes attached, to further identify the people and help put them in historical perspective. The following people made significant contributions to this project. Stanley Anderson Ronald Hardway and Ruth Knight Sherri Anderson Norma Hamrick Robert Lynch Susie Gallemore Roger Stanley Nettie Gregory and many others cost of CD is $20.00 plus $1.20 sales tax for WV residents Cost of book (includes printed maps) $30.00 plus $1.80 sales tax for WV residents Printed maps for CD (CD contains the maps in digital format so you can print them yourself) $4.00 plus $0.24 tax for WV residents EVERYTHING including CD, book, and printed maps $40.00 plus $2.40 for WV residents We accept checks or money orders only. 1. [WVRANDOL-L] WV Laws Pertaining to Cemeteries
    2. Where can I find out what the law is pertaining to family cemeteries on private land. Can you erect a stone in a family cemetery for an ancestor who died 75 years ago? Would you need to have the permission of the absentee land owner to do this. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
