Kevin, THANK YOU my husband had a cousin who was there. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- - DIGGING YOUR ROOTS By: Anne (Devine) Hurst - Columnist For THE WEST UNION NEWSPAPER,THE HERALD RECORD DATED MARCH 13, 1979 STORY TOLD BY: JIM HUSK The following is an excerpt from Mrs. Hurst's Colum in the West Union newspaper, The Herald Record, dated March 13, 1979. Speaking of which leads me to the Interesting Civil War data and Story Jim Husk gave me a few weeks ago. You remember we did an article on Jim's family last year. He's a History Buff and has been doing some interesting didding, but I'll let him speak for himself. I'm giving this as a Partial Record of My Great-Uncle George W. Husk, who volunteered his services for the Civil War when he was Nineteen Years Old. My origin is from Morgan's Run at Harlen. I'm the Grandson of Bob Davisson. My mother was Ida Esther (Davisson) Husk. My Grandfather was John Husk, The brother of the George W. Husk in this article. When George volunteered for the Civil War his mother was very much opposed to it. George didn't say any more about it but one day when he was going around the hill, supposedly to get a bucket of water, he met my grandfather (his brother John) who was about six years of age at that time. George gave the bucket to my grandpa Davisson, gave him a nickle, and said, "Now John, go on home with the water, I'm gonna slip down over the hill and I'm gonna be gone for a while," and as the records so indicate he died in a Prisoner-of-War Camp in Georiga. The man Starved to Death! All of his mustering out records are so printed and his service record shows this too. His dad and mother applied for his pension and did receive a small amount. Thank You, Jim, for sharing this story. this area is so rich in history and the only way to preserve it is to get it in print. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------- --------------------- Gloria Jean (Powers) Husk, 114 Arizona Street, Carrabelle, Fl. 32322 Surnames:Husk,Critchfield,Bissell,Wilson,Riffle,Helmick,Cox,Palmer, Dennis,Powers,White,Stout,Teter,McCally,Norton,Privett,Harris,Morris, Wyatt,Bennett,Sandlin,Woods,Karickhoff,Lantz,Casto,Rohr,Cooper Powers & Husk Families http://www.gloryway.com & My book: "Love Always:Glory's Way" search for Gloria Jean Powers at: http://www.booksamillion.com/ plus many others.
Kevin, It's awfully nice of you to offer to do this for people. I'm sure many folks will really appreciate it. Autumn
Is there anyone on this list that may have the date of death of Medora (Dora) J Hicks, dtr of James and Lucretia Wilmoth of Randolph Co. She married Clifton Hoff in May 1879, but he remarried Hannah Isner in 1886. My great grandmother always said her mother died young. I am having a hard time figuring out which children belonged to the 1st and 2nd wives as the date of births and stories conflict with census info. Clifton died in 1920, and I do not have date of death for Hannah. I do not know where any of them are buried. Thx for any input. Debbie
Greetings veterans and newbies of the rootsweb. I would like tell you there are some really great folks who are willing to help just for the asking. I, myself do Volunteer research at Andersonville Civil War Prison in Andersonville Georgia. There are Any research I do is absolutely at NO cost and I am willing to do what I can. There are 417 prisoners on record from your state and more than 256 West Virginia or Virginia Union who died here, I thought I would send my offer. As Virginia was one of the states that was torn apart and was truley brother against brother,,I feel the need to say I am not in anyway trying to focus on the horrors of Andersonville compared to any POW camp in the north ..( i.e.Elmira ) or any others and do not wish to stir up arguments on this site. My focus is dedicated to ALL of those held prisoner during this war , on both sides. I just happen to be near Andersonville so this is where I do my work. Here are my sources of research. There are 2 online databases to do lookups.....One by name...one by Company and Regiment. I also have a copy of the Dorence Atwater Death list which has the names and grave numbers of 12960 graves with only 460 marked as " UNKNOWN " This along with a CD I have which contains 34,000 names of the 45,000 who were imprisoned there which helps me find prisoner records because of misspellings of the names or alternate names. I visit the prison site every couple of weeks and have access to the onsite databases as well as the physical files. I would like to let you know of another service I offer which is to take photos of graves for a small fee. Please do not consider this spam as my research offer is FREE for the asking and will be posted on this county site only once. If there is anything I can do in helping your research at Andersonville, please just ask. wva_ladybug@hotmail.com Is this still a good address, Diane? Did you find any of my files useful? Still looking forward to your info. There are some glaring errors in one file I sent. Someone last spring sent me a file that skipped a generation and had the wrong Roy husband. That was included in the files I sent. I hope you read that note on the bottom of one. The files were for comparison purposes. No, the same woman did NOT marry father and son. Father and son had the same names but let me assure you they married two different women. Email me and we'll straighten this out. Dear Glenn: The Pioneer Family Reunion emphatically does not involve Hamricks alone. True, Hamricks once dominated it and, to some extent, still turn out in the largest numbers because they probably have the largest numbers. But we have been moving in recent years toward a wider concept of "pioneer families." After all, Hamricks were not nearly the first. And they were not the only Pioneers. Last year, we had a Cogar speak on Gregorys and Givens. Next year, I have invited a Lynch and an author of pioneer books to speak. Hamricks were preceded in what is now Webster itself by several families including Millers and Arthurs, among others. So they have no right, even if I am one, to confine a "Pioneer" designation to themselves alone, although our family is not known for failing to assert its rights or opinions in anything. I know that representatives of many other family surnames are coming again this year. It has never really been possible to isolate any particular one of these families because of the inter-relationships. And as the years have advanced, many more nuclear families hold their own reunions. Barbara White, proprietor of the Mineral Springs Motel, tells us she has three different weekends for "Hamrick Reunions." I was just advised that the Happy Jack Hamrick descendants had a reunion at Holly River State Park. It had evolved into Hamrick, Gregory, Dodrill, Riggleman, Miller, Chapman, Cogar and Mollohan. But then we were leaving out other kin: Arthurs, Dobbins, McElwains, McAvoys, Conrads and, in my own line, Heveners, among others. I have more Hevener lines myself than Hamrick. And more Gums from Pocahontas than Hamrick. The Moores were well known in the area. The principal of my grade school was Ted Moore. At its apex, when it attracted 5,000 to 10,000 people, many different families came out to see old friends who, perhaps, had moved away from Webster. Our concept, partly because of the internet communication and the increased interest in genealogy, is to bring them back. The genealogy fair on Saturday at the VFW Hall will have representatives from Webster and Braxton County; individual exhibits; and an exhibit from the Hackers Creek Pioneer Descendants. By the way, I notice that your question came from a posting on the Pocahontas County list, where my maternal families, Trainers, Lambers and Gums, and even many of my Hamricks lived in the days when the biggest employer in the countryside was the sawmill at Cass. And it was at the Pioneer Family Reunion that I met a Hamrick relative, Clara Jane Ahlberg, whose great grandmother and mine on the Gum side were sisters. What is gotten from it is to some degree up to the individual. But I haven't missed it in 10 years. And Anna Dodrill, 79, of Monterville has not missed one since 1926. You will be welcomed and asked to tell about your family tree. I am going to take the liberty of posting my answer to your question because it is one asked by others. -- danhamrick@earthlink.net Dan Hamrick 402 23rd Street NW Canton OH 44709-3818 Telephone: 330-454-2376 > Daniel, > Can you tell me if the Pioneer Reunion involves Hamrick's only? With the details pretty well set, here are the plans for the annual Pioneer Family Reunion. Only a little tweaking remains. But a reminder: If you're planning to attend the Satrurday dinner, your reservation is needed right away. PIONEER FAMILY REUNION The annual Pioneer Family Reunion once the state¹s largest and still one of the oldest spanning 76 years will be held for two days on Saturday Aug. 24 and Sunday Aug. 25 in Webster County. The Saturday events will be highlighted by a genealogy fair at the VFW Hall in Webster Springs. And the Sunday events will be focused around the annual picnic and family gathering at on the east side of WV Rt. 15 the family park 17 miles from Webster Springs and 14 miles from Valley Head, WV. The reunion was first held in 1926 as it evolved from gatherings following church services as the Hamrick-Gregory Reunion but it has been extended to include all families with roots among pioneer families in West Virginia . The growth of the internet and easier communication between individuals has led to the attraction of more and more people from out of state with roots in West Virginia. Everyone is invited to attend any of the events. The program will begin with a genealogy fair at the VFW on Back Fork Street in Webster Springs from 7 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. Saturday. The genealogy fair will include representatives from the Pioneer Family History Preservation Society; the Webster County Historical Society; the Hackers Creek Pioneer Descendants; the Braxton County Library Archives; and any others who want to display or sell genealogical materials. Michael Henline, president of the Pioneer Society, said tables will be free, and everyone is invited to display family research material. There will be door prizes including two recently published books, ³A Pictorial History of Webster County² by Mark Romano and ³Gone but Not Forgotten,² an inventory and survey of Webster cemeteries by Henline. The day¹s events will be capped by a dinner at the Bergoo Community Center to begin about 7 p.m. with dinner to be served at 7:30 o¹clock. The dinner will feature oldtime story telling and singing, led by the Rev. Jim Hamrick of Harper¹s Ferry, WV, and the Rev. Charlene Hamrick of Rock Cave, WV. Advance reservations are required for the dinner at $20 per person. They may be obtained, if received soon enough, from Sharon Hamrick, 5501 Cardinal Drive, Orient, OH 43146; Telephone: 1-614-877-4009. Profits will be used for the preservation of Pioneer Family history. The Sunday events at the family park will begin at 10 a.m. with a service to be deliveed with introductions of those present; a service by the Rev. Charlene Hamrick in lieu of her late husband, the Rev. David Hamrick who died of a heart attack following an emergency fire run last Jan. 25 and then a long break for food and visiting on the grounds. The afternoon program will include a talk by Mark Romano about how he collected thousands of photographs and published a book; information about Henline¹s book; and information on the work of the Pioneer Family History Society. Konnie and Floyd Conrad of Kernersville, N.C., will furnish prizes to be raffled at the gathering on Sunday. I have been archiving the Elkins Intermountain obituaries for rootsweb and saving them on the Tucker County website. I am however missing the obituaries for Monday Aug 5, through a snafu on my computer. (The file did not save properly.) Is there anyone out there who might still have the Monday, Aug 5, Intermountain who could copy the obituaries for me or send me a hard copy of the obituaries? I could email you privately with my address. Otherwise, I will try to get them from the Intermountain directly. Thank you for your help in this matter. Janet, I'll be glad to go to The Inter-Mountain office and pick up that days paper for you. Just a thought. If one thing I've learned about researching....some women had babies right up until menopause... I have one case of a woman marrying at 16 and had her fist baby at 17. She had one every 2 or 3 years until age of 48. The only exception were the years 1863-1866. I check Civil War records. Hubby was in the Army during that period. They didn't waste time. She had a child 11 months after his discharge date. I stopped making assumptions about spouse dates, too. 20, 30 or 40 years apart if not unheard of. Unusual, but not unheard. <G> Also Researching: Appley, Asbury, Barnum, Bauder/Bader, Bowling, Briggs, Burton, Carr, Clark, Dyer, Ecker, Finch, Flannery, Fox, Grim, Hardendorf, Harman, Hawk, Hayes, Henkle/Hinkle, Keith, Marcy, Pier, Sawyer, Summerfield, Schenk, Shepard, Slocum, Strong, Teter, Tinkham, Thompson/Thomson, Walker, Whitlam, Wilks, Wolford, Wood, Woolever. http://www.treelines.com http://www.lineage.net Regards, Diane ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ --------------------------- Useful sites: http://rwguide.rootsweb.com/ (Hints for starting) http://communities.msn.com/AGenealogyExperience (A Genealogy Experience)
I found a Della Wolford, daughter of Aaron Wolford and Elizabeth Flanagan. Della was born Oct 1885, Tucker County, WV. She married Harly Reed. There's also an obit for Calvin Flanagan (1925-2000). His parents are Grover Cleveland Flangan and Della Wolford. Does anyone know if this is the same Della....or maybe do a quick marriage look up in the clerk's office? No, sorry, the obits don't mention the years of marriage.
