Caplinger; b. 1816 ; m. Wilson, Elizabeth George Caplinger; Jacob Wilson Caplinger; Martha B. Caplinger; b. 1838, Randolph, VA; For me to find my ggg grandfather's parents names, etc., it looks like I'm going to have to use the process of elimination method because of the large number of Caplingers named George, John, Jacob, etc. coming out of VA/WVA into TN, KY, IL, OH, and OR in the late 1700s and early 1800s. In those days, they seemed to name not only their own children by these first names, but their nephews got the same first names too. Thanks again for your help. Although I'm a new subscriber to this list, I've been researching the Caplener/Caplinger line for many years. I've established the Caplener line back to John Caplinger's birth, circa 1803, in Tennessee. He married Martha Bell (also from Tenn.) and they settled in the Phillips Co. area of Arkansas. John died in 1850 in Arkansas. His middle initial is probably "B". However, one researcher thinks his middle name is Trumbow. Maybe he was nicknamed "Bow". WV (which is next door to Randolph Co.) a Hugh Feneven (?) family. :-) Hugh Feneven(?) 54 MW Farmer Ireland Ann 34 FW Ireland John 17 MW MD Catherine 13 FW MD Margaret 10 FW VA Eliza 3 FW WV Ann 5 FW WV A personal note here. :-) It looks as though this family moved from MD to WV between the years of 1857 and 1860 as WV became a state in 1863 this would account for the change in place of birth but my guess would be not location. The 1870 Barbour Co. Census record also shows this..... Dear Vern and anyone else interested, The Shifletts did not originate from the Hessian soldiers who were brought over during the Revolutionary War. Several Shiflets are documented as being part of the militia which was assigned to the Albemarle Barracks where the Hessian soldiers were confined. Shiflets were the guards, not the prisoners! Also, Blan Shiflet is documented as being a Rev. soldier at Cornwallis' surrender at Yorktown. Two Shiflets, Howard and Thomas, are documented as serving in the French and Indian War, which occurred c. 1752. Shiflets were on the tithe lists in Orange Co. in the 1750's and we have a record from the 1730's where a John Shiflet posted bond in a court case in Orange or Albemarle County. Unfortunately, much erroneous information (all undocumented) about the Shiflets has been published in some of the standard Albemarle works either as "truth" or supposition, which has been taken as the truth.
