Nedra, Thank you for your post with the Pennington names and dates of births, deaths and marriages. They are similar to what I have listed. A few dates I have are off by a few days and had a couple that were off a few years. Thanks again. [email protected]

Members, It seems that we have ruffled a few feathers. Seems like no one wants to hear that Henry C. Pennington, and Virginia C. Pennington, were cousins who married. This comes pretty close to what my father was telling me, but he thought they were brother and sister. As hard as it is to accept, cousins did marry back in "the good ole days." I do have a few questions. 1. Why wasn't Henry C. Pennington listed on any of the Pennington sites, that I have visited or mentioned as being the son of Rebecca Anna Pennington? They had Martin and Jesse Pennington listed as Rebecca's children but no sign of Henry. 2. What group does this Pennington Family belong in? This family starts with Richard Pennington Sr., 1745, Richard Pennington Jr., Solomon A. Pennington 1807, Solomon J. Pennington 1847, Rebecca A. Pennington 1850, and then Henry C. Pennington 1872. 3. If this research is correct, how would I get the rest of this family added to the group? 4. Is there any information of where Richard Pennington, Sr was born? I seen listed on a webpage that he "settled in Pendleton County," Does this mean he came over from England or Ireland? 5. Is anyone else, interested in this group of Pennington's, who would like to share information they have. Comparing information sure helps and ends confusion. 6. What books are available that have Pennington Research or ancestry in them? I'm only interested in books about Pennington's. That if there are any. I'm only interested in a serious reply to my questions. Please if you are about to send a four page lecture or start a feud, don't respond. [email protected]
Hello, Like I said in an earlier message. I do not have Henry C. Pennington's birth certificate as of yet. The information was given by a member who took time by going to the Elkins Courthouse in Randolph County, WV. I am sending for his birth records and at the moment I do not have an actual birth certificate yet. I will fill in the information that I do have. [email protected] This family is NOT mine, but for everyone's sake, can someone kindly send ALL the facts for a person, any one of these, in the same message? Henry C. Pennington was born 29 date March 1872 Randolph County, WV, son of Rebecca Anna Pennington and unknown father. This is recorded in Randolph County, WV Register of Births _______Vol. #________, page #________. 1880 Federal Population Census of Randolph County, WV, District ____???____, page number_______, Dwelling/Family # _______, household of ____________. Thank you. Without this, someone will give a son Henry C. to EVERY Rebecca Pennington in WV! <G> Nedra Nedra Dickman Brill, Certified Genealogist [email protected] Historian, Henckel Family National Association Coordinator Pendleton County, WV, [email protected]
Hello, I am researching the family of Pennington's, who are relatives of mine and Debbie's. Listed below are the links that we have gathered where we found some of the information to help us in our search. Hope this helps some of you out. While visiting a local library in Martinsburg, WV. I found a census record in a book call 1880 Randolph County, WV and, a book by Maxwell listing this group of Pennington's in an 1880 Randolph County, WV census. Henry C. Pennington was listed in this group. There were only a few books there with Randolph County, WV listings but while talking to the genealogist helper there, he will try to get more books in on different counties of WV. Other information was passed on by other Pennington researchers. Unfortunately I don't remember their names, but if you followed the postings you should have seen them. I can't remember word from word in the letter sent to Debbie but it did mention Rebecca Anna Pennington listed on a birth certificate as being the mother of Henry C. Pennington. Also, she is the mother of Martin and Jesse Pennington. Now the father unknown part, I don't know if that was just for Henry or if it was pertaining to all three children. I'm sending away for a copy of Henry's birth certificate, since he is my Great-grandfather, to confirm this. Also while talking to my Aunt I have gathered information on the rest of my family such as my Grandfather and Grandmother, Joseph J. Pennington and Elva Ida Scheffer Pennington. Along with the birthdates and deathdates of my aunts and uncles. I haven't found a marriage certificate of my grandparents yet. But I'm still searching. I do know that they were married in the year 1919. My Grandmother Elva Pennington had a family bible listing all these dates, but unfortunately it fell into the wrong hands and was disposed of. This upset me greatly. So I asked my aunt for some information about Joseph J. Pennington and Elva down to listing all his children with birthdates and deathdates. I haven't completely the rest of the family tree as of yet. Since I have lost contact with some of my Uncle's and Aunt's and my cousins. I'm trying to find them and add to this family tree. This takes time and patience. Listed below are the links I have so far on this group of Pennington's. Some of the sites I have not fully checked out completely. Some of these site has lots of helpful tips and information about other groups of Pennington's. Hope this helps some of you out. Some of you by the way being on a different Internet provider may not be able to connect to these sites. These sites are posted on America Online. Cyndi's List of Genealogy Sites on the Internet ROOTS-L Resources: Family History Centers and Library GenForum - Surnames Index of Surnames: PENNINGTON West Virginia Web Links W VGenWeb Page for Pendleton County, WV Adams County, Pennsylvania GenWeb Project Pennington Research Association Genealogy Randolph County WVGenWeb I will keep everyone posted if I come across any new information. I have a family member who would like to join the group. The only problem she has is that she blocks mail from outsiders. How would she edit this in her mail controls...she has tried several ways when subscribing to the groups but hasn't recieved anything. Does she have to unblock all her mail to be in this group??
Dear members: I've received several letters asking me to confirm my belief of my line of Pennington's. I don't have all the sources listed where I have received my information, but I do have some. Thanks to a member of this group who took the time to go to the Elkins Courthouse in Randolph County and look up Henry C. Pennington's birth record. This member in turn wrote me and gave me the information that showed Henry's mother was listed as Rebecca Anna Pennington and father unknown. I knew that Henry was in this group of Pennington for a while but I couldn't find his parents but from the information sent to me I put it together. Yes, I jumped the gun a few week ago. I will be sending away for a copy of Henry's birth certificate myself. I'm new at this genealogy and I'm still learning. So please be patient with me. I also like to take the time out to thank the members who took the time to help me out. I will continue to follow posts and hopefully learn more about genealogy and my Pennington Family. Debbie
BURKE/BOURKE/BURK/BERK, ROWAN My wife's ancestor Alexander BURKE/BOURKE/BURK/BERK and his brother Thomas were born in Newtowncashel, Co. Longford, Ireland in the early 1840's. Emigrated to Coalton, Randolph County, VA/WV before 1860's. Their father's name was Michael. Mother was Mary ROWAN. Its possible that they also emigrated to Randolph County, Virginia in the 1840's-1850's. Apparently most of the family later moved to Pittsburgh, though some remained in WVA. Hi everyone, Sandra Duncan, listowner of this list, has informed us that she can not return as listowner. Sandra had a stroke and is still recovering. She is one of those special people who is always willing to help someone. We hope for her continued recovery and return to genealogy. Now we must find a new listowner for this list. A listowner should be a contributor to Rootsweb to support the list. This is $12/year. A listowner's time is taken up mainly with helping people sub/unsub and handling bounced email (unsubbing bad addresses.) If you are interested, please email me at: [email protected] IMPORTANT! Sandy had 20 lists that I am sending this message to. Please include the name of this list when you email me otherwise I won't know which one you are talking about. Thanks D. [email protected]
Dear Cousins, I have several questions. 1. What group does my line of Pennington's belong in? (Richard Sr., Richard Jr. Soloman A., Soloman J.). 2. How do I submit information that I have to the group I belong to? 3. I also like to attend the Pennington Reunion that is located in WV or VA. My dad Samuel Pennington has moved and needs to update his address to recieved an invitation. Who ever is in charge of this please e-mail me, so I can send you the addresses for invitations. Thank you Debbie
Cousins, Found this in a book I was searching through. Thought I would share it with everyone. Pennington: English: habitation name from p laces in Lancs., Cumb., and Hants. The latter two are so called from OE Pening PENNY (used as a by name or from a tribute due on the land. + tun enclosure settlement. The place of this name in the parish of Leigh in Lancs. is recorded in the 13 th century as Pinington and Pynington, and many be from the OE Pinnington settlement association with Pinna' the var. Pinnington derives specifically from this place. Thought this was interesting. Debbie
Cousins This is the web site where I entered the surname Pennington in as a free search. Thought this would be handy for someone searching for other surnames other than Pennington. If you want to see the best (I am prejudiced) Pennsylvania Dutch see the Pennsylvania Family History website at: http://homepages.rootsweb.com/~padutch/ Be sure to check out the FmailyHart database as well. It has over 150,000 names online, many from old Randolph County, WV. Thanks! Don

Carolyn, I'm not asking people to do my research for me. All I asked for was, where to find census records, on-line for Randolph County, WV. Or where to write to get books on census. I don't live close to Randolph County, WV, and have no transportation to travel there. I've visited my local library, searching for information about my family, and had no luck. It seems that from what I'm looking at so far, is that Henry C. Pennington and Virginia C. Pennington were cousins, who married. This information came from a source: Fansler, History of Tucker County; Maxwell, Randolph County History; 1860 Tucker County Census. From the information giving me, it showed that Soloman A. Pennington had sons named William and Solomam Judy Pennington. Also from another source: 1880 Randolph County Census: Living in household of Soloman A. Pennington age 73 and wife Jane age 63. Son: William age 39, Daughters: Rebecca age 35, Jane age 20, Mary Elizabeth age 17 and grandchildren: Jesse age 13, Henry C. age 8, Sophia Elizabeth age 5 1/2 and unnamed granddaughter age 1 1/2. If Soloman A. Pennington is Henry's and Virginia's Grandfather, and William and Soloman J. Pennington are brother's, and Soloman J. is Virginia's father and if William Pennington is Henry's father, then that makes Virginia and Henry cousins who married. This is why, I was asking for the information about census records, so I could research this for myself and be sure. Debbie
Hi Debbie- in the Randolph Co Marriages, there's a marriage for William H. Pennington age 24 (parents Solomon A & Jane) to Pheby Smith age 21 (parents AC & Elizabeth ) on 7 Dec 1865. I did not find a Henry mentioned likewise in the 'They Rest Quietly' book. The books of census info used to be made up by Wes Cochran out of Parkersburg but last month I sent a request and it came back undeliverable so I don't know about him. Probably the easiest way is to order them is thru your local LDS Family History Center on long term loan. The only census I have are 1840, 1850, 1860 and 1870 because they are relatively small. -----Original Message----- From: [email protected] [SMTP:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, March 22, 1999 2:10 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Pennington Shaunta and Pennington Researchers, I've been looking and asking for information. But I still believe that Henry and Virginia were cousins. That much I'm sure of. I hear everyone talking about how to search Census records on line, but no one ever gives clear information about where to search for Randolph County, WV census on line. I also would like to know where and how to get books about Randolph County, WV census. Debbie Debbie, I think you should look for a marriage record to verify William's parentage (look in more than one county, including Red House, MD--I have some Pennington's that crossed the WV/MD line to get married). That William lived at his dad's with several young children also present doesn't really tell us that he's the father of Henry C. Pennington, although he certainly could be. If you could find an 1870 census maybe that could tell us whether William lived at home then or whether he had a wife and child (perhaps Jesse). I'll let you know if I come across anything about a William and Henry Pennington that seems relevant. shaunta ==== WVRANDOL Mailing List ==== My homepage is now under radical construction-------- http://www.geocities.com/Athens/Acropolis/3577 - After too many complaints to Travellers about privacy and accuracy, they are shutting down all GEDCOMs there, mine included.
