Hey Lillian, Harrison County, WV is very cosmopolitan and very tourist savvy. Tourism is a major WV business. Look on the Randolph County web page for a link to the Harrison rootsweb page. Most all the major motel chains are found on I-79 and US 50 in the Clarksburg area. The people are most hospitable and I'm sure you will enjoy your stay. Olin Compton
Lillian in Oregon route on Saturday --- > Hi, Can anyone tell me if Harrison Co WV has a Visitor Center? I am planning a research trip to Harrison Co. WV and am in need of visitor information, including a Harrison County map, and accommodations. Thank you, Lillian in Oregon Hello Lillian, A good place to get a map and information is at the Chamber of Commerce at 348 W. Main Street in Clarksburg. This street is a one way street running west to east (the matching street is Pike Street). Their phone number is 304-624-6331. They can get you a map of the area and so can most businesses. The Harrison County Courthouse is located on 301 W. Main Street (almost directly across the street from the Chamber). Parking can sometimes be a problem near to the courthouse, so wear some walking shoes because you may have to walk a few blocks. Don't plan on getting curbside parking nearby. There is an automated parking lot behind the courthouse but it is a little pricey. There are several pay parking lots and one parking garage within a four block radius. I personally avoid the garage because all of the lower levels are leased out and visitors have to park on the top two levels. The terrain around the courthouse is hilly.but not overly steep. The Clarksburg Public Library has a good local & regional reference library. It is located at 404 W. Pike Street. There phone number is 304-624-6512. The collection is located in an old mansion nicknamed the "Waldomore". The keeper of the materials is named David and he is very knowledgeable & helpful. I know that there are hours most days (except Sunday), but I do not know what the specifics are. Some of the hours are staffed by volunteers and some are by David personally. This is a good place to start. All of the hotels are located along interstate I-79 and may have either a Clarksburg or a Bridgeport address. Clarksburg is on the west side of the interstate and Bridgeport is on the east. There is a Hampton, a Holiday Inn, a few others as well as some bed and breakfasts. There is a bed and breakfast on E. Main Street that looks nice from the outside (never been in it) within a mile (or less) of the Chamber, the Library and the Courthouse. I can't think of what it is called now and if you walk it is down a hill then up a hill. The Chamber of Commerce can give you a current listing. You may have trouble booking some weekends due to local football games if you come in the fall. There is a regional airport in Bridgeport ("Clarksburg - Bridgeport Benedum Airport") with US Air commuter service. However, it has a limited number of flights (I think 3 - 4 per day) and flights in or out. Many people (myself included), will drive to Pittsburgh, PA or Charleston, WV (about 2 hours) or to Columbus, OH (about 3 1/2 hours) to catch a flight. It is a lot cheaper and usually not really longer in time when you consider the layovers waiting for the commuter plane. Hope that this helps, Mark Moeser [email protected]

Sarah Mace was born 11 January 1796 and died 19 September 1871. Was she the daughter of Ebenezer Mace and Mary Stalnaker or Henry Mace and Anna Currence? I have recently received some conflicting information. Sarah Mace married Jesse Wamsley Abt 1817. He was the son of Joseph Wamsley, Sr. and Eva. Thanks, Wanda

Hello: I am researching the Jerome (Gerald?)B. Harris/Mary Jane Kissinger family. Jerome was born in 1836 in, I believe, Pulaski, Pa. d. 1900 in Daly WV.s/o Barnabus Tunis Harris and Rachel Marquis and is buried in the old Ward Presbyterian Churchyard in Daly, WV. B. T. Harris had a farm in Coitsville, Mahoning County, Ohio. I have no information on Mary Jane Kissinger other than she died in 1923 vb. 1848 I presume in Lawrence County Pa. Jerome and MJ emigrated to Randolph County WV ca.1877. Children of the family were: 1. Nettie b 1866, Pulaski, Pa. 2. John b. 1868 " " 3. Lenora b 1872 " " 4. Gailord, b. 1874 " " 5. Jerrold b 1875 " " 6. Barney Tunis b. 1878 Beverly, Randolph Co. WV 7. Mary b. 1880 " " " 8. Rafael b 1882 " " " I would appreciate any info anyone might have on any members of this family. They all seem to have disappeared from Randolph Co. WV.

HAVE SOME INFORMATION ON HOWELL SURNAME . WHAT ARE YOU LOOKING FOR MY GRANDMOTHER WAS HOWELL?
Fatama Smith was also listed as "Faty" in the census. I thought it rather impertinant until I saw her "full" name. John H Smith did make it into the 1850 Census. Unless there are two of them, I would go with the former date. I think I had gotten into the swing of the Roby family above Isaac Wolford and America Ann Smith and had a "senior moment". He is Levi Wolford - not Roby. Jeff, Who are the Hales that you are researching? My husband has Lucretia Hale born abt. 1790-1810, residing in Floyd County, Ky. Deborah
Hi, Jeff, I was going through your notes and found some things that might interest you. I have the spelling of John's wife as Fatama Smith with a "A". This is off marriage records. She was nicknamed "Faly" according to her gravestone. Their children: Abraham Wolford was born Mar 1848 according to 1900 census records Isaac T Wolford was born Oct 1850 in Tucker co, according to records.... but Tucker split off from Randolph... not sure how you want to handle that in your database. Andrew C Smith's son John H... I was emailing with a descendent of his and he said John was born in 1859. I'm emailing back to him to see if it wasn't a typo. I'll get back to you if he replies with an answer. Got a question for America Ann Smith and Issac Wolford. You have their son listed as Levi Roby. Is this Levi Roby Wolford or did Levi change his name? Regards, Diane
