    1. Re: [WVRANDOL-L] Land records query
    2. Dear Cara: I am not an expert, but, I can think of two or three possible situations: The person got the land thru a will. Perhaps the person got one of the early land grants from the state and therefore it is not in the grantor books. Perhaps the transaction just never got in the books or was lost thru sloppy record keeping....Lyle Corder

    1. [WVRANDOL-L] Land Records
    2. Cara
    3. Lyle, Thanks for the response on this question. It is really strange isn't it. The person in question for me is from Pa. and initially moved to Pendleton and later to Randolph Co.. around 1807. He started selling land inRandolph Co. in the late 1820s and there after. Again in Lewis Co., in 1835 he is selling land of which there is not record of purchase. Weird no? There is no record of his inheriting it or a land grant for war service. Thanks again! Cara

    2. Cara
    3. Hi all, I have a pretty simple question. How on earth can there be Land Grantor records for a person and piece of land and not a Land Grantee record? Wouldn't a person have had to be granted or buy the property before they could take the step of selling it. I'd really appreciate some help on this point. I have several of these situations in WV and mostly in Randolph Co. and it is driving me to drink. :-) Thanks! Cara in Az

    1. [WVRANDOL-L] Joe Brown--for Robin K. or open question
    2. PAT SALETORE
    3. Robin, Harvey Waybright is my paternal grandfather's first cousin, but he is more like my dad's age. We were discussing the lynching of John Brown. (I will get to a point eventually) I pointed out that the people who were actually testified about the crime(for the prosecution) included Levi White and noticed that the suspicious looking Levi White in my database had your name on the sources. His mother's folks are related to the Whites. (Isn't everyone? But his are close this Levi) So we conspired against you so that he was supposed to contact you about the Whites, because he wanted to see if you could help him any on that front and also ask if you knew anything about the trial. Now the issue of Joe Brown's hanging is of consequence to both of us for somewhat different reasons. My great grandfather Fleet was called to testify in the matter, having been among the posse that captured him (and probably involved with the lynching). His connection is a little different, I'll let him explain--mostly because I am a little fuzzy on it anyway. Harvey grew up in Whitmer not far from where Joe met his maker. (as in yards away from the site) My part of the conspiracy was to try to get some information from bureaucratic sources. I have a gift for that. :-( So there you go, I have put the question out to you and ANYONE ELSE who knows anything about it.... What WAS the deal with Joe Brown anyway? The rumors can be pretty fanciful. Like the one where he killed his 2 previous wives and several law officers and stuff. The theories include that this was a "hit" paid for by lumber interests because of a labor dispute or a personal argument with someone in town. Was Joe Brown really that dangerous? Was Joe Brown framed? Or set up? Was Joe psychotic, schizophrenic, or just drunker than usual that day? More questions than answers--I have read the articles. The whole town knew and covered it up! What gives here? 2. Faith
    3. Hello! If anyone is going to the court house in Randolph County this week and can do a look-up for me it would be greatly appreciated! I am trying to find the birth information on Lee Anderson Arthur b.Nov. 1864 (was told by relatives 1863) and a marriage to Pricy STILTNER around 1886. If they had any births between them until 1888 would be great also. The main is the birth and marriage though. Lee's mother was Mary Margaret or Margaret Mary Arthur. I am trying to figure out who the father is. Hopefully there will be an answer on the record. Thank you in advance. Faith blount@digital.net P.S. I will be moving out the state within the next 2 weeks. Please reply with priority mark so that I can stay in touch. Thank you!

    3. Hi everyone! I found the WV Hillbilly still listed in a site for WV newspapers. However, when I called the number listed, it was disconnected. As was reported by another responder who visited Richwood, WV previously, this newspaper no longer exists. That also confirms my memory of they closing a few years ago. I kept an article on this and if found, will report further findings. I contacted the WV Culture & History Department in the State Capitol Complex in Charleston, WV and here is what they provided: "The WV Division of Culture and History's Archives Library, located here in the Cultural Center, has the WV Hillbilly on microfilm. Your friend will need to come to the library to view the microfilm. I wasn't able to find any current information about the publication, but an Archives librarian will be able to help. There is no fee to view microfilm, nor is an appointment necessary. If your friend would like to talk to someone in the Archives Library directly, s/he can either call 304-558-0220, extension 151 or 168 or email fharmstrong@wvculture.org." Trust this will aid Leslie and others that are searching for this wonderful newspaper that was published by Editor Jim Comstock.
