The first issue was published 15 June 1880. The Index was sold in 1893 and the name was changed to the Raleigh Register. The Raleigh Herald was first published in 1900. Both newspapers operated until 1984, when they were merged into today's Register-Herald. Some obits of Raleigh Co. residents have turned up in the Monroe Watchman, published in Union, WV. Some can be found in the archives of the Beckley Register-Herald newspaper office. The old Index archives were burned some time back, and there are a few articles that survived, but not much. I would also suggest checking the Fayette Tribune archives. You can call and speak to the archive librarian at the Beckley paper about what they have. The number is 1-800-950-0250. I don't have a tollfree number for the other publications - sorry! If you need a death date for someone from Raleigh in that time period, contact me and I will be happy to look it up for you. Hope this helps! Melissa Bailey Duggins Hi Melissa, Tim Spradling. I was wondering if you would be so kind to verify a death date for me (when you have time) for Sarah Mcmillian ACORD who died in Raleigh Co., WV reportedely in 1905 as you offered to do for Katie. She was 72 years old then and was the Wife of William Calvin ACORD who lived to be 94. I am trying to verify her Parents were Abraham MCMILLIAN & Elizabeth MORRIS who moved to Fayette Co., VA in the 1840s & lived next door to William ACORD's Father & Mother Robert "Cuddy" ACORD & Nancy GORE. That area of Fayette Co. became Raleigh Co., VA in 1850. Thanks Melissa, Tim Spradling SPRAD666's Home Page
