This message is from: Frieda Davison <fdavison@sunmuw1.MUW.Edu> Good morning, list members, I am Frieda Patrick Davison. I grew up in Russell Co., Va., but am interested in Raleigh County research because my Dad worked in the coal mines in Ameagle and Kingston. I am in the process of writing a book and would love to make contact with anyone who might have known my Dad or a descendent of someone who worked with him. The names below are taken from the work history that he wrote when he was trying to get his black lung benefits. My Dad's name was Clyde Anderson Patrick During 1931-1933, he worked at Ameagle Coal Mine, Ameagle Collieries Mining Co., Ameagle, W.Va. Here are the names that he mentions from that mine: Armstrong, Dutch Busby, Ben Busby, Bessie (wife of Ben) (actually this is my aunt -- Daddy's sister. She is still living, but would like to make contact with anyone who might have known her or Uncle Ben). Cash, J. Chapman (Called Chap) Superintendent of the mines "Cooper" -- Daddy didn't remember this man's full name. In fact we don't even know if this was his first or last name. He did remember that he was "rough". Daddy said Cooper would cuss the mountain above them as they mined. Daddy said it always scared him when Cooper would do this, that it was just tempting God. Garbo (Called Garby) -- Daddy didn't remember this man's first name, but they were "buddies", meaning that they worked in the same room in the mine. Hughes -- Don't know this man's first name and he may have worked at Kingston rather than Ameagle. Lasley, Carl (also seen as Lesley) Section foreman McGinnis, Albert (ran the Post Office at White Oak) Norris, Jim (also seen as Narse) Perry, Marvin Perry, Dolly (wife of Marvin) Daddy boarded with the couple for awhile and also worked with Marvin. Stover, Arnold Stover, Denzil (dated Juanita Patrick -- another aunt of mine) Stover, Eunice (wife of Mose) Stover, Jeeter Stover, Mose Stover, Roy Stover, Wilburn (married daughter of Elijah Stover) Daddy said all these Stover's were children of two brothers but he didn't remember their names. He also boarded with Mose and Eunice Stover for awhile. Treadway, Nelson (preacher) Watson, Bernard A. (African American who was killed in a mine accident in 1934). Daddy helped recover the body. He said this was the first dead person he ever touched. During 1934-1935, Daddy worked at Kingston/Pocahontas Coal Mine, Kingston, W.Va. Hughes (may have worked at Ameagle) -- see above. Seabolt, Donald. Daddy and Donald were great friends but lost touch over the years. Any information on any of these folks would be thrilling. Frieda
