This was printed in "Giles County, Virginia--History-Families" Volume 2. Page 231 Mitchell Clay married Pheobe Belcher in Franklin County, Va. in 1760. In 1774 the Royal Governor of Virginia, granted him 800 acres on Bluestone Creek, Clover Bottom, Then Fincastle County, Va. now Mercer County, WV. After an Indian attack in 1783, which killed three of his children, he moved to New River and purchased from the executors of Captain William Ingles a part of his farm, which is now owned by the Celenee Corporation. Mitchell Clay was born in 1736 and died in 1811; he is buried on his farm but later moved to Birchlawn Cemetery. He had seven sons and seven daughters. In Volume 1 of the Giles County books it states on page 222 that Phoebe Clay was born 1740 and died 1809. The Clays were the first people to make their home with in the present boundaries of Mercer County at Clover Bottom. The Clays are of English origin. Hope this helps. Phyllis
