Listers, First, I'm sorry to be using the list for this purpose, but since we have no way of knowing who may or may not have put our names in their email address books, I know of no other way to reach the unsuspecting person whose computer is infected. PLEASE do not respond to the list. There's no point in cluttering up the archives with more OT subject matter. Also, many of you will recieve duplicates of this post, since I've sent it to two neighboring county lists. For that I also apologize. Everyone should know about this virus by now, but just in case you aren't aware of this thing and how it works: The Sobig.F virus spreads when someone has opened attachments in emails with the subject line "Details," or "Your Details," or "Re: My Details," or "That Movie," or "Wicked Screensaver," or a few others. Once the file is opened, the virus resends itself to email addresses from the infected computer's address book. And when the emails go out, they don't appear to be from the person whose computer is infected. The virus picks at random another address from that address book to be the "sender." The reason I know someone who knows me has the virus is because I keep getting bounced mail that was sent to people I don't even know. The mail is being bounced because of virus content. Obviously the virus has picked me out of someone's address book to be the sender. Today I have reason to think the problem could be with a genealogy connection because one of those bounced mails had gone to [email protected] Other bounced mails were sent to [email protected]______, [email protected]_______, [email protected]_______, [email protected]______ and [email protected]________. Do any of these names look familiar to anyone? Just so you know, I don't have the virus. My firewall and virus protection are enabled at all times and updated two or three times a week and my virus scan runs every morning. These days there's just no excuse for Windows users not to have the latest and best in virus protection. Anyway, I'm asking that you please run your virus scan. If you find you are infected, and can't fix it any other way, there is a downloadable "fix" at symantec.com. Please help! My mailbox keeps filling up with returned mail! Oh, and by the way, you don't have to respond to me telling me you do or do not have the virus, or that I'm not in your address book...my mailbox is full enough already! :-) Best regards to all, Sharon Phillips Belenski
