Hi Mike, I sure don't know. Acord is not a direct line for me - they do marry into most of the lines I am researching thereby giving me plenty of Acord cousins. I'll paste some additional information below. At present, I need the parents of Bessie Noel Acord Hawley born March 23, 1899 in Fayette County and died at her home in Oceana, Wyoming County on May 13, 1961. Bessie was buried in the Callaway Cemetery at Glen Daniels on May 15, 1961, survived by her husband Roy Hawley, 4 sons and 4 daughters. I suspect Bessie may be the daughter of Joseph Eugene and Edna Earle Young Acord but need some real proof. Any help there would be appreciated. Rita The Post-Herald, Beckley, W. Va. Tuesday Morning, March 25, 1930 Robert Acord, Raleigh County's Oldest Citizen Answers Final Summons Robert Acord, 103, Raleigh county's oldest citizen, died about 7 o'clock Sunday morning at the home of his son-in-law, James McGraw, at McGraws, Wyoming county after a brief illness. The son of John and Nancy Acord, Robert Acord's life spanned the greater portion of the nation's history. During the war between the United States and Mexico he worked about iron furnaces in Ohio. When war between the states broke out, he enlisted as a soldier of the Confederacy, although then old for active military service. In the Spanish-American war period Mr. Acord was an active gentlemen of 70 years, and a score of years later his mind was sufficiently alert to appreciate the significane of America's entry in the great World war. As a man of 23 years, he was present for the first session of court ever held in Raleigh county, following the formation of Raleigh county in 1850, an event which he recalled vividly in the final years of his life. For more than 50 years he had been a member of the Baptist church, to which he was most devoted. During recent years he made frequent visits to Beckley, where he was greeted by friends who delighted to hear him recite episodes of Raleigh county's early history, which events were ever fresh in his memory. Physically he showed but slight evidence of his great age. His eyesight was unimpaired, and in many ways he showed the vigor of a much younger man. Mr. Acord was born at Bolt, January 6, 1827, ten years before the general assembly of Virginia passed an act establishing the town of Beckley. As were many other men of that day, he was a great hunter, and delighted in the pursuit of the wild game then so plentiful in the wilderness. His entire life, with the exception of his brief period of employment in Ohio, was passed on a farm. The longevity of the Acord family is proverbial, John "Jack" Acord, the father of Robert Acord, lived to be 104 years of age, while his wife, Nancy Acord, the mother of Robert, was more than 80 years of age at the time of her death. However, Robert Acord outlived his brothers and sisters, and is the last of eight children. Mr. Acord went to Jackson county, Ohio, shortly after the outbreak of the Mexican war, attracted by the wages then being paid employees at iron furnaces there. It was during this period in Ohio that he was married. Following the war with Mexico he returned to Raleigh county, settling near what is now Lester, where he resided until his enlistment in the army of the Confederate states of America at the opening of the war between the states. At the conclusion of this war he moved to Wyoming county, where for almost 50 years he resided before returning once more to Raleigh county, about 25 years ago. Since that time he had lived near bolt, where dwell many of his people. Funeral services will be conducted this afternoon at Bolt.
