Another researcher sent me an offlist query re: specific Richmonds, Smiths & Adkins. While I can't help with specifics, maybe I can nudge in the right direction. 2 of the earliest settlers in the area that would become Raleigh County were Matthew Adkins & Parker Adkins. They migrated from Franklin County, VA in the 1810-1820 era. Matthew lived in the Cooper's Creek area & Parker lived at Pinch Creek. Parker had sons named Larkin, Robert, Richells & Anderson. In the 1820-1830 time frame, Jim Wood writes of William & Samuel Richmond, father & son, who came from Greenbrier. William was a Rev. War participant & pensioner. Samuel, who owned the fine bottom & island at Richmond Falls, was a "wealthy & leading citizen." Samuel, who was a Union sympathizer during the Civil War, was killed by a Confederate bushwhacker in 1863. Wood also wrote a small bio on Henry Smith who came to Raleigh in 1820-1830. It says that he settled at McCreery, at the mouth of Piney. It also states that he was "noted for his great physical strength." Sincerely, Mike Peters [email protected]
