Notes for DANIEL SHUMATE: Daniel Shumate entered the Fauquier Co., VA militia in August, 1777, as an Ensign, during the American Revolution. Gwathmey Will of Daniel Shumate Leeds Parish, Fauquier County 29 January 1806 In the name of God Amen, I, Daniel Shumate of Fauquier County of Leeds Parish being weak of body but of Sound and disposing mind and memory do make and ordain this my Last Will and Testament in manner and form following: that is to say, first I commend my soul to God its Creator in all humble hope of its future happiness through the only merits of my blessed Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ and my body to the ground to be decently buried at the discretion of my executors hereafter named and as to worldly estate which God has been pleased to bless me with, I give and bequeath as followeth. I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Sarah Ann Shumate, one feather bed and furniture, one negro fellow named Jo and all the corn and provision now in my possession for the support of the plantation this year to her and her heirs forever. It is also my will and desire that the negro fellow belonging to John Parris and the negro wench belonging to my son William after my death shall remain on the plantation this year as my sons Mark and William promised me if I rented aplan(?) and began a crop they should do so. Item the rest of my estate after the rents and my just debts are paid and one third part given to my wife are to be equally divided between my daughter Judah Parris, Duanna Johnston, Dinah Luttrell and my son Samuel Shumate but in case John Parris takes h! is negro away, his wife is to have no part of it and to be divided between the other three.
