Mike, The News Notes for the Raleigh/Fayette Genealogical Society dated winter 2002 has a small paragraph on Daniel Shumate the original. It states that he is used as an ancestor for membership to SAR and DAR. The DAR at Mullens had some of the papers. It says he was an ensign in the Virginia militia in 1783 and lieutenant 1784. I know this is not your question but having tried to figure out the Shu mate and the James Ellison I, II, III, I wish you luck. Anyway I got some of my answers out of the Revolution War from the DAR.. Also someone in the Society may be able to help you. The Shumate and Ellison families have been printed a few times.
