The Charleston Daily Mail Charleston, West Virginia December 3, 1933 RALEIGH MAN SLAIN IN QUARREL AT MILL Beckley, Dec. 2. ---- A quarrel over the right to remove ashes from a saw mill was given by authorities as the reason for the slaying today of John Godbey, 39 years old. Godbey, officers said, went to the mill, which is near the Dry Hill schoolhouse, 10 miles from Beckley, this afternoon and began to haul away the ashes. His right to them, officer said, was disputed by John Jennings, 28 years old, who lives nearby. Jennings, officers said they learned, obtained a shot gun from his house and returned to renew the quarrel. Subsequently, they charge, he shot Godbey in the right breast, inflicting a wound which proved fatal within a few minutes. After the shooting, Jennings came to Beckley and surrendered at the county jail, to Jailor Clayton Mills. The prisoner told Prosecutor Clarence Meadows and Sergeant R. L. Walker, who questioned him, that Godbey was armed with a knife. A murder charge was placed against him, and he is being held for a hearing Monday.
