    3. The Raleigh Register, Beckley, W.Va. Friday, August 17, 1923 Mr. Manning Dies After Long Illness Was Former Representative in House of Delegates and School Superintendent Hon. A. J. Manning, former member of the West Virginia house of delegates and superintendent of county schools in Raleigh county, died last Wednesday night at his home at Saxon, this county, after a long illness. His age was 72 years and his death, the immediate cause of which was leakage of the heart with other complications, was not unexpected by his friends who were acquainted with his condition. Mr. Manning came to Raleigh county when quite a young man, married and lived the greater part of his life within the confines of the county. It was 43 years ago that he married Miss Clementine Trump who, with 12 children survives him. The children are Lawrence, of Saxon; Hubbard, of Mt. Hope; Augustus, of Glen Rogers; Winfred, of Saxon; Oley and Fred, unmarried and living at home; Mrs. Bertha Honaker, of Saxon; Mrs. Lottie Sizemore, of McGraws; Mrs. Clara Lucas, of Glen Daniel; Mrs. Ollie Daniel, of Glen Daniels; Mrs. Maude Snuffer, of Lester; and Mrs. Ethel Snuffer, of Bolt. Mr. Manning was one of the older type of citizens and had served his county as superintendent of county schools a number of years ago, having been elected on the Republican ticket. Then in 1920 he was nominated by the same party for house of delegates and elected, serving his constituents at Charleston in the legislature of 1921. He was a farmer and was respected by all of his neighbors and friends, having also taught school for a number of years prior to his election as school superintendent. He came to Raleigh county from Virginia, having been born in Carroll county, in the Old Dominion. It was a short time after his arrival here that he married Miss Trump, a native of the county. He had many friends in addition to his large family who regret to learn of his death. Funeral services will be held this afternoon from his home and the remains will be laid to rest in the cemetery on the old home place.
