My ggg grandfather is Jordan N. Peters is listed in the 1850 census for Raleigh County, VA/WV. I am attempting to document his middle name. I have seen Jordan's middle name listed as both "Nichols" & "Nicholas," Finding nothing on Jordan himself listing his middle name, I decided to check on those in our family that were named for this gentleman. My grandfather's brother was named Jordan N. Peters. We just called him "Don." My great grandfather, Daniel Peters, also had a brother named Jordan N. Peters. I decided to look at these descendants of the elder Jordan to see if I can find information on their middle name & therefore solve the mystery. Kirk Dickens in his Dickens family history books lists all three Jordan N. Peters as Jordan "Nicholas" Peters. "Raleigh County West Virginia Marriages 1850-1898" transcribed by Ronald Ray Turner lists the marriage of Jordan Peters to Macy Webb on 29 April 1892 and lists this Jordan's middle name as "Nickols." Thinking he was transcribing based on the actual marriage record, I thought I had found documentation. But a copy of the actual marriage log shows the nuptial in question to be between Macy Webb & Jordan N. Peters, without benefit of a middle name. Now, the actual marriage license might list him as Jordan "Nickols" Peters. I have not seen the document in question. What information would lead Turner to write his middle name as "Nickols?" Would he have been privy to the actual marriage license? What does Pauline Haga write of this marriage? Jordan N. "Don" Peters, the brother of my grandfather, married Erma O' Connor in the 1920s & Mamie Lee sometime later. I am unaware of the dates & location of these marriages, but expect the location of both to be Raleigh County. Does anyone have information re: these marriages, something that might shed a light on this Jordan's middle name? Thank you in advance for any information. I look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely, Mike Peters [email protected]
