Hello George! Here is what I've found on John Butler Hedrick. He enlisted in 1864 with Thurmond's Partisan Rangers in Monroe County. He was paroled on April 26th 1864 at Lewisburg. He was 19 at this time and had brown hair, dark eyes, and a dark com- plexion. He was 5' 8 inches tall. He was listed as a resident of Monroe County prewar. He is also listed on the 1914 Summers County roster according to the authors research for this book. He was a resident of TRalcott, Summers County in 1908. It looks as if his service record was brief. A review of their service oould retrieve all the activities of this unit in this book: Thurmond's Partisan Rangers & Swann's Battalion of Vir- ginia Cavalry AUTHOR: Jeffrey C. Weaver. George I've found nothing for Michael Quinn in this book. Glenn Belcher in Princeton WV Sorry if you get this twice. Would any kind soul have a list of the men who were in Thurmond's Rangers. Check out: familytreemaker.com I'd be interested to know how 2006 differs from 2005. Anyone?
Laura: I love Family Tree Makers (v. 2005 and v. 2006). It took a little time to adjust to the new version, but it well worth it. Nyla I have been using family tree maker for a long time, but I don't like the new format. Was wondering what people are using, and why they like that particular software. I want to change, just don't know what to change to at this point. Laura
Are you referring to FTM 2005 or FTM 2006? I'm presently using FTM 2005. I didn't like it at first either and refused to use it, but when my system went down my hubby put the new version on my computer. When I saw what he'd done I complained, but continued to use it and now I like it. The only thing I don't like is that the burial location is no longer displayed on the front page but is hidden in the facts. I'd be interested to know how 2006 differs from 2005. Anyone? As someone who works in the computer field everyday, Backups are very important. Remember that there are two different types of backups. 1. Disaster recovery 2. Current data A Disater recovery backup is one that will allow you to get your computer & apps up and running from a major problem. Hard drive crash, lightening strike (yes a surge protector helps, but 99% of the folks I see forget about the phone line or cable), Motherboard failure, etc. A data backup might include the programs themselves, but you will need the ORIGINAL disks to reinstall the programs if something catastrophic happens. Also, consider offsite storage of a backup if you are in an area prone to flooding, tornados, hurricanes, or other natural disaters. If a fire were to rage through your house, where would you be? Your computer would be gone, anything attached to the computer would be gone. So what kind of backups do you need? Make at least one "ghost" copy of your computer. There are many different hard drive imaging programs Symantec's Ghost is just one. Every time you add a major program to your computer make another Ghost image. I recommend using a DVD-RW as most people can back an image to 2-4 DVDs. If you use RWs you can use them over and over. Make sure you have one good backup offsite. This could be a bank safe deposit box, your son/daughters house out of the area (if there is a natural disaster that can affect a large area, you don't want to lose them all), Parents house, friend on the other side of the country who is researching also. Data backups should happen often. Everyday if you can. If you have broadband internet there are places you can host your backup copy fairly inexpensively. At least once a week (or however often you feel that it would be OK to redo what you have done). Again, make sure you have a copy offsite. Yes, this can be time consuming but so can recreating a genealogy database of 10-150K people. Just my professional opinion, and no I make no money on the sale of any item discussed here. Though I do offer disaster recovery planning services through my business. Laura Curry Loding Researching many names throughout SW WV... Thank you Sue. Is there anyway you could copy and paste that to me. Did you do a census lookup and if so would like that also. Appreciate all of your help.
