Nyla and I are putting the Raleigh County Family Book online at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~wvrcbiog/Cover.htm An online version that everyone can see and add to as we go along. We don't have everything up yet, and are working on more articles. We are also proofreading and editing the articles we already have online. We both had computer problems so if we have left anyone out, please let us know, and resend. If you would like to add articles, then please let us know.

Last night, on the way to midnight services to celebrate our Savior's birth, my mind drifted back to a simpler Christmas & to my Grandfather. I remember following him up the "holler" & up a small ridge, where he cut our Christmas tree. Christmas to Grandpa meant orange slices, peanuts & candy corn, fruit of all kinds & assorted nuts. When you consider the present world of I-pods, laptops & cell phones, today's kids may not think much of Grandpa's goodies. And to be honest, maybe I didn't either back then. But, 20 years after his death, I'm remembering my all-time favorite gift -- a box of chocolate-covered cherries. I ate one a day, savoring them for as long as I could, like the memories of a carpenter, born 1900 years after a more famous man of the same profession. Thank you Grandpa & Merry Christmas to all my Raleigh County family & friends! If I night offer up a holiday suggestion, keep your focus on the simpler things. Sincerely, Mike Peters npeters102@aol.com
I found a birth record for Ellen Stover in Fayette County, and it says "March 2 1887 Ellen Stover born Mt Carbon parents are A.H. Stover and Caroline Stover." My uncle said his father had a sister they called Ellie, but her parents should have been Ashford Hall Stover and Sabie Stover. So, I don't know if this was my grandfather's sister or not. Anyone run into this Stover family? Thank you, Gracie

I was wondering if anyone knew any information about the Stover/Williams/Wriston Feud, about 1920? There is one article about it at: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~ggracie/library/stover/feud.htm Have any of you found out anything more about this? Heard any stories? Thank you, Gracie

I feel your pain. 4x4's can only go so far and its not so easy trying to tell someone that even a 4x4 will have a challenge going some places. I wish I could say, oh yes, here you go....but given what has happened in the area and the lack of state and federal funds, I say we are lucky to even attempt it. Besides, the cold kills all the rattlers anyways...... That is strange! I am using National Geographic Topo. I have noticed there are some inaccuracies on elevation lines. I would get a hard copy of a Topo map and see if you can get in touch with anybody in the area. The next step would be to actually gho there on a 4x4. I know that may sound nuts. However, many here will tell you, that is the better option in many reaecrh cases. The year I used for Topo mappig was 1939. Yes,alot has changed, but the area at that time was surveyed rather well. Let me know what you may think and I am sure other may chime in Mark --- fmds8119 <fmds8119@msn.com> wrote: > Mark I've been searching for the cem on Sewell Mtn > which it seems to be the > North Mountain on the New River gourge the cem is > supposed to be on property > owned by a shotting club and was fenced in by > Babcock State park employees > and say the graves are unreadable and mose sunk in > the ground. Hello- May I ask which mapping program are you using? I aski this becuse some of the Topo maps that the mapping programs use are a bit off. A friend of the family was able to survey the New River Gorge area and after a few years of reserch, the newer topo maps are less accurate than those of the 30's for that area. Strange huh? Does anyone have information about a Poor Farm run by the Canaday's at Glen View between Glenn White and Crab orchard. Supposedly Austin Webb died there (between 1889 & 1900) and was buried in a potter's field in the area. Anyone know a name for that potter's field - did it become an actual cemetery? (Austin Webb was married to my great grandmother - Mary Milam) Genness in Georgia
