Thank You Elizabeth Brook Cloud (Bunch) from what I understand was at least 1/2 Cherokee. How do you get the death records? Sherry
Possible incorrect email address for a lady that is researching surname MADDY in Raleigh Co. Interested in corresponding with Sherranlynn Kincaid Nichols if she is still working on her family history. Thank you Debbie in Missouri btree@fidnet.com
The first email you sent there was nothing written in the email. I dont know what information I put on roots but here is what I know. Elizabeth Brook Cloud born June 23 1892 in Raleigh Co WV died Dec 1957 in Oak Hill WV Her fathers name was White Cloud I dont know what her mothers maiden name was. Her mothers secound husband 's last name was Mankin they had children and Elizabeth had some 1/2 siblings on the reservation (I dont know the name) Elizabeth married Oscar Dell Bunch and had 5 children Vadis,Howard, Vernon,Loreine, Lois Madonna. Lois is my husbands mother she married Sherman Blake. Any information is appreciated Thanks Sherr
Go to this link for WV records: http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_select.aspx It is a work in progress, so not all counties are available nor all records for all counties are available at this time. I noted Elizabeth, her husband, and one of her children are buried in High Lawn Cemetery. Have you located Elizabeth's death or marriage records? Have you checked Mankin marriage and death records? I don't want to replicate your efforts. You might also want to search for Cloud families in the 1880 census. http://www.familysearch.org/Eng/Search/frameset_search.asp?PAGE=census/search_census.asp Since Elizabeth was born 1892, her parents would almost certainly have been born by 1880. There are a number of American Indians called Cloud, but all are in the upper midwest: Wisconsin, Minnesota, Dakota Territories, etc. They would not have been Cherokee, but Sioux, Cheyenne, Chippewa, and a wide variety of lesser known tribes. Cherokees were forced to leave North Carolina and Georgia in 1838-1839 and relocated to Oklahoma via what is known as "The Trail of Tears". Some eventually did come back and settled on land owned by a sympathetic white man (Col. William Thomas) in North Carolina. That said, however, all the Cloud households I looked at in the WV, VA, NC, KY area seem to be either white or negro. I find a marriage record Surrey County, North Carolina for Wiseman Cloud Age 22 married Adeline Thompson Age 20 both from Surrey, North Carolina. Their date of marriage was: Nov. 22, 1894. Ceremony was performed by Henry Copney at Rubin Cloud's. Witnesses were: Sam Snow, George Copney and Rubin Cloud. There is also a later marriage record for Rubin Cloud, Age 60 marrying Agnes Russel, Age 45 on Oct. 21, 1906. WC James, minister performed the ceremony in Mt. Airy Township. Witnesses were: Tom Adkins, Mylus Graham, and Edgar James. There is also a death record for a Samuel Cloud from Raleigh Co. WV. He was an infant son of a Reuben Cloud and Callie Carter. The date of his birth and death was May 14th and May 17, 1954. Based on this info, I was wondering if possibly this Rueben was the son of Frank or one of his siblings. Karen
I found a death record for Frank Cloud from Raleigh County on the WV State Archives website. It indicates that Frank was the son of Wiseman Cloud and his mother's maiden name was Atuuin(spelling?) and that both parents were from North Carolina. Here is the link for the death certificate: http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_view.aspx?Id=1393731&Type=Death There is also a death record for a widow of Frank P. Cloud: http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/va_view.aspx?Id=180210&Type=Death Hope this helps! Karen

Living is the Town District (Beckley) in HH # 90 is CLOUD, George D. age 30 Farm laborer Born in VA Frank P. age 23 Born in VA MILES, Martha A. age 42 Housekeeper Born in VA (widow) Becket O. age 16 Born in WV Note: In looking at the 1880 census online it looks to me as though Martha A.'s last name is MILES. However, David Anderson Turner read her last name as Miller. Becket could also be read as "Blacket". It is uncertain what relationship this unit has with one another. It is possible that George and Frank are brothers. ------------------------------------------------------------------ Brookie Cloud is listed as living in the 1900 Raleigh County WV census, Trap Hill District, HH # 162, with a McDonald family. I can't read Mr. McDonald's first name, but his wife is named Sarah. She is called "Brookie Cloud" and is listed as having been adopted. Her date of birth is listed as June, 1892 -- so it is surely the same person. In 1910 Raleigh County Census the following persons with the last name of Cloud are listed: Frank P. Cloud, born about 1853 inVirginia, living in Beckley. Fred A. Cloud, born about 1884 in WV, living in Beckley. Lunie I. Cloud, born about 1884 in VA, livng in Mabscott. Can anyone help with some info on the town of Mabscott? Many years back there were some old newspaper clippings that mention a "Foster's Funeral Service" which was located in Mabscott. The service was owned by William foster who was at one time active in the possible ownership or at least the management of the old Bottling Works which was located there. Thils William Foster was as at one time a county sheriff in Raleigh county. He was involved with the Herold newspaper (ownership) and also the power company at Beckley. Would love to find more info on the funeral service. And would love to come across a good picture of him. Is there a wild chance that someone can assist me in how to locate any of the old coke bottles that have Mabscott printed on them? My ancestor was managing the bottle works when those coke bottles were made . . . it may seem strange, but that's why I would love to find and purchase one.
