Based on the following article, it would seem the mine explosion is a different mine that the New River Company Mine, located at Cranberry in Raleigh County. Google "cranberry mine explosion" Is this it? Oglebay-Norton Mine Explosion Nicholas Chronicle October 30, 1958 13 Perish As Explosion Rips Nicholas Coal Mine An explosion deep underground in a gassy coal mine Tuesday killed 13 miners but four of their fellows managed to survive. Early Wednesday morning all of the bodies had been recovered from the Oglebay-Norton Co.'s Burton mine. The dead are as follows: Henry Bryant of Summersville. William Anderson of Camden-on-Gauley. Harry Fletcher of Camden-on-Gauley. Pete Weese of Richwood. Joe McVey, Gwen Wyatt, Kyle Spencer, O. C. Gates, Eddie Stephenson, Henry Westfall and Ralph Adams, all of Craigsville. Howard Chafin of Fenwick. Donald Davis of LaFrank. State Mines Director Crawford L. Wilson said the mine was badly torn up, but not excessively, meaning that it possibly could be restored to production without too much delay. Wilson told newsmen late Tuesday night that "everything indicates a gas ignition." He said that only the formal investigation could determine exactly what ignited the gas. There was no ensuing fire. The explosion occurred about one and a half miles from the surface, between 10:30 and 11 a.m. Tuesday. There were 54 men underground at the time. One of the 37 who reached the lung-filled air outside soon after the blast was Marvin Harless of Camden-on-Gauley. He said he was about 1,000 feet away, and the explosion was so forceful he temporarily went deaf in his left ear. Harless ran down the main entry but the dust got so stiffling [sic] he turned off a side entry. He found his way blocked, returned to the main entry and eventually made his way out the driftmouth. The big mine, strangely silent after the first 37 scurried out into the overcast daylight, sealed the fate of the remaining 17 until shortly before 4 p.m. Rescuers came out partially supporting Artie Humphryes [sic] of Craigsville. He had taken refuge in one of the less-damaged sections of the mine and had managed to stay alive until rescuers found him. An encouraging report went out that six other men had survived, but this did not stand up. There were only three. They were brought out in a group more than an hour later. They were on stretchers which the rescuers had managed somehow to carry along just under the roof of the mine as they negotiated waist-deep water in some areas underground. Two of the men were burned so badly their conditions evoked gasps as they were brought out wrapped in blankets. They were Paul Davis a timberman of Craigsville, and William Tucker, also a timberman, of Persinger. The third man, burned, but not as seriously as the other two, was Oakey Donaldson of Summersville. Sacred Heart Hospital at Richwood, where all four survivors were taken, said Tuesday night that Davis and Tucker were listed as critical. The Burton Mine sits on the banks of the Gauley River at the foot of Cranberry Mountain. The nearest town is Craigsville, about a mile aw ----- Original Message ----- From: <Atnvolsgirl@wmconnect.com> To: <WVRALEIG-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Monday, June 26, 2006 4:06 PM Subject: [WVRALEIG] Cranberry Mine > Does anyone know when the Cranberry Mine explosion was, if there was an > explosion? > > Anita McClung > Fayette County, WV >

I am interested, because I have a section on cemeteries on the Raleigh Co Website. Many of those old cemeteries are in such poor condition and I am afraid one day will be completely lost and forgotten. If you want, I can put the names and photos on the website, Thanks, Gracie ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jeanne" <bankerjeanne@comcast.net> To: <WVRALEIG-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, June 04, 2006 2:08 PM Subject: [WVRALEIG] Graveyard by Peach Tree Falls in Peach Tree West Virginia > I have been looking for information on Mary Milam who married James A Webb. > Prior to this marriage, Mary had a child by Thomas Webb buy the name of > Thomas James Milam. Hi Pam, I agree with you that evidently there were two Frank Clouds. According to a book by Larry Shuck, William A. Fink and Rachel Shuck had a daughter named Nancy A. Fink who married Frank Cloud. Excerpt: 6. Nancy Alice Fink 1864-1930 married Frank Cloud born 1857 I "think" Frank P. Cloud and George Cloud were brothers. I think Frank's name was originally Franklin and got shorten over the years. I think the Cloud brothers are sons of George Washington Cloud and Lucinda Walker, according to the census records. I "think" the nephew you identified in 1910 was Mason Claude Cloud, Sr. born 15 Sep 1889. George Cloud married Annie Farley. Looking at the two death records listed below, I don't believe the two Frank Cloud's are the same. Frank Cloud, son of Wiseman Cloud died at age 22 in 1921 and is listed as single and Negro. Nancy A. Cloud died at age 65 yrs, 9 mos, 15 days in 1930 is listed as white. The big difference in their ages and their races prompted me to have a look to see if I could determine if the Frank Clouds mentioned on these death records might in fact be two different persons. Searching the 1910 Raleigh Co., WV Census, I find living in Pemberton Frank P. Cloud, 57; his wife, Nancy A. Cloud, 45; with a family of 5 of 7 living children (out of 10 children born to this woman) plus a nephew. Among the children listed is Frank P. Cloud, Jr., age 3. This family is listed as white. In the 1910 Mt. Airy Twp, Surry Co., NC is listed Wizeman Cloud, 38; his wife Lizzie, 49; listed with a family are 7 of 10 surviving children (out of 15 children born to this woman). The two oldest are listed as stepsons of Wizeman Cloud. Among the other five is listed Frank Cloud, age 14. This family is listed as black. Hope this helps, Pam Kerschner ----- Original Message ----- From: "Karen Willey" <hillhoney@snet.net> To: <WVRALEIG-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, May 10, 2006 7:27 PM Subject: [WVRALEIG] Frank Cloud >I found a death record for Frank Cloud from Raleigh County on the WV State >Archives website.
