    3. Shirley and others, The best source of very detailed maps is the United States Geological Survey, National Mapping Program. You can get an index for any state and a Catalog of topographic and other Published Maps from: USGS Map Sales, Box 25286, Federal Center, Bldg. 810, Denver, CO 80225. They probaly even have a net site where you can check out what you want and possibly order it.For genealogical activities I have found the 7.5 Minute Series to be the most useful. 1. Re: [WVRALEIG-L] County Map
    2. Hi Everyone, About the map, we have had very good luck in obtaining detailed county maps from the highway department of each county. These maps are usually very clear with all roads clearly marked & usually cemeteries, churches & schools also marked. I'm fairly certain that if one would go to the hometownusa web site or one very much like it they could find an address for the state highway department for the state & then write to them for info on purchasing county maps... Enjoy the posts... Thanks Ellie

    2. Glenn Belcher
    3. HELLO RALEIGH LIST MEMBERS I'd like to introduce myself in my own unique way to the list. I'm not looking for any particular surname; I'm looking for lots of men from 138 years ago. I just joined the General Alfred Beckley SCV Camp Saturday. It is a group for those who like to honor and remember the veterans from the WBTS/CW. We'll be looking for gravesites to clean (any help is appreciated), markers to order and install, and hundreds of gravesites to record for our Raleigh County Veterans Database we're also prepared to perform a period veterans ceremony at the gravesite to honor and remember his military service, we'll also give educational programs for schools, scouting groups, churches and civic groups, as well as Living History presentations. I've got a database of 1700 veterans from Mercer County. We'll be accumulating the same information on Raleigh County everytime it becomes available. Veterans from surrounding counties will be recorded too, as that information becomes available Thanks for looking this message over. Thanks again to our list owner for making this Raleigh List available to us all. glenn

    1. Re: [WVRALEIG-L] Raleigh County Records/Courthouse
    2. Doris Slaughter
    3. Hi Shirley, Marguerite and all, I have been to the Raleigh County court many times. The first thing you will need is coins for the long term parking meters which is about 2 blocks from the courthouse building. The courthouse staff is limited, but they will show you the location of marriage, death, birth and deed books. It is help your self, but they expect each person to return books to the shelf. Raliegh County Court records start with 1850. and these books are keep in order with very good index books. All of these books are very large with the old sewn binding so they will not put them on the copy machine. Be prepared to do lots of hand writing. When I was there last July there was talk about a local historical group who were trying to get a grant to have the book rebound so each page could be remove and copied. Also, this information on Raleigh County would be a big help in finding records about ancestors of that area and I quote from my book:"In 1850 Raleigh County was formed from the southwest part of Fayette County. In 1871 Raleigh County annexed 168 square mile (107,520 acres) from Wyoming County. This section of land is now called Slab Fork District. Records in Raleigh County Land Book shows that William A Fink asked for a boundary adjustment because he owned land in both counties, but lived only twenty miles from Raleigh County Court House. He only owned three hundred and forty five and a half acres on Tommie Creek so what was the reason for the large land grab, approved by the West Virginia State Legislature? In her book, Mary Keller Bowman states that Historian G P Goode wrote, that the annexation was to strengthen each county's political majority-Democrat in Raleigh and Republican in Wyoming. Of course, Raleigh County gained the rich coal fields of Winding Gulf." So if you find your people on Raleigh County 1880 census, but don't find them on then on the 1870 census check the Wyoming County 1870 census. Hope this will help, Doris At 09:18 PM 6/29/98 -0500, you wrote: > > >Can anyone help Marguerite out with this. 3. Marguerite, Have you ever visited the cemetery where Mary Jane Tyree Bailey is buried? George W. Tyree and his wife Nancy G. are also buried there. Let me know if you need directions. A word also about the courthouse: If you need a lot of records, plan to allow enough time there to handcopy. The clerks are nice about pointing out where the records are, but frown on asking to photocopy pages from the records books. You either have to handcopy them or let them type an abstract of each document, which is not cheap! The Raleigh Co. Library is excellent - there is a large number of books, history and transcribed records. Hope this helps!
