    3. There is a map at <http://www.nps.gov/neri/graphics/neri_hist_townmap.gif> that shows the location of the town of Fire Creek, between Beury and Sewell, in Fayette County. This map shows the location of historic towns and coal camps. The Standard Fire Creek Coal Company was located in Beelick Knob, Fayette County, WV. 3. I stopped by the WV dept of Transportation a few years a go and picked up a set of these maps for Raleigh, Wyoming & Mercer Counties. 1. [WVRALEIG-L] ROSS, William Paris, b. ca. 1865 in VA; d. ca. 1939 in WV (md. Romanza B. LILLY)
    2. Attempting to sort out the family of William Paris ROSS. Thus far, I have him listed as born ca. 1865 in Floyd Co., VA; died at age 74 in Flat Top, WV. He married Romanza Bell LILLY on 18 June 1887 in WV. Romanza Bell LILLY was the daughter of John E. LILLY and Julina A. LILLY (same surname as husband), and was born 19 June 1867 in Mercer Co., WV. >From the obituary: Mr. William Paris ROSS was a farmer; he died in his home following a prolonged ilness with Bright's disease. He was buried in the family cemetery at Flat Top, Mercer Co., WV. >From the obituary for Mr. William Paris ROSS, I've located the following names of survivors, and wish to learn the given names of these individuals: *Mrs. R. B. ROSS (this is likely Romanza Bell, but the 1997 edition of the Lilly Family History lists her death as 1892). *Mrs. H. E. CREWS (a daughter) *Mrs. Paris I. LILLY (a daughter) *Mrs. Sexton STOVALL (a daughter) *Mrs. O. T. LILLY (a daughter) *Mrs. Elvin MEADOWS (a daughter) *Mrs. Lester FINK (a daughter) *Mrs. Jack WOOD (a daughter) *Mrs. Theordore HATCHERS (a daughter) *Mrs. Vaughan SMITH (a daughter) Also survived by one son: Mr. W. P. ROSS, Jr. of Flat Top, WV, and one sister, Miss Nancy ROSS of Flat Top, WV. Predeceased by daughter: *Mrs. Karl BRAMMER, formerly of Barn, WV (died 15 years before her father). BTW: the obituary was found in an old scrapbook once belonging to my great- aunt, Bessie (Lilly) LOGAN. Bessie saved obits, but often failed to incorporate dates on each obit, so I cannot give an exact date of death for Mr. ROSS. Any assistance with naming the daughters of William Paris ROSS, Sr., and Romanza Bell LILLY would be greatly appreciated! Sincerely, Lainie Hendrix

    1. Re: [WVRALEIG-L] Clay-Belcher Site Update
    2. This was printed in "Giles County, Virginia--History-Families" Volume 2. Page 231 Mitchell Clay married Pheobe Belcher in Franklin County, Va. in 1760. In 1774 the Royal Governor of Virginia, granted him 800 acres on Bluestone Creek, Clover Bottom, Then Fincastle County, Va. now Mercer County, WV. After an Indian attack in 1783, which killed three of his children, he moved to New River and purchased from the executors of Captain William Ingles a part of his farm, which is now owned by the Celenee Corporation. Mitchell Clay was born in 1736 and died in 1811; he is buried on his farm but later moved to Birchlawn Cemetery. He had seven sons and seven daughters. In Volume 1 of the Giles County books it states on page 222 that Phoebe Clay was born 1740 and died 1809. The Clays were the first people to make their home with in the present boundaries of Mercer County at Clover Bottom. The Clays are of English origin. Hope this helps. Phyllis

    2. I don't but into others research letters, but I had good luck getting the latest County maps from WV by writing to the West Virginia Dept. of Transportation, Division of Transportation Planning Map Sales, 1900 Kanawha Blvd. E Building Five, Charleston, WV 25305-0430. Their maps give all the little roads, churches, cemeteries and such. I went to McDowell County and didn't get lost once. There was a small fee for each county map and some of the maps were so large that they were on four sheets as McDowell is, but they are easy to read even then. Maybe this will help some one, for I sure was helped. I plan next to go to Raleigh county and I have been studying the map for some time. Thanks to all, Va. Smith

Marguerite Mathews / pontine@nh.ultranet.com > > > > > > Toodles! > Shirley > toodles@airmail.net Marguerite, My suggestion would be to use the U.S. Geological Survey maps. I have worked quite a bit in the Civil Engineering field and these maps have been an invaluable source. They show roads, trails, contours of the land, wooded areas, buildings, cemeteries, etc. These maps are kept current. You should check out their mapping website at - http://mapping.usgs.gov/mac/isb/pubs/booklets/genealogy/genealogy.html You can purchase the USGS maps from the USGS or a local map dealer. For each State the USGS publishes an Index to Topographic and Other Map Coverage and (State) Catalog of Topographic and other Published Maps (all scales). To obtain a free index and catalog for one or more States, contact any Earth Science Information Center, or call 1-800-USA-MAPS. You can then check USGS Map Dealers website at - http://mapping.usgs.gov/esic/usimage/dealers.html This website shows the United States. You simply click on a state and a list of all the dealers in that state is displayed. I hope this helps. Thomas W. Dillion II http://members.aol.com/Noillid2/
