    3. My sister: Dollie Louise's name was changed to Elizabeth Louise and was called Betty Lou. She was legally adopted by Bernard and Oma Moore Kirby when she was 16 years old, about 1949. She lived in and around Prince, Quinnimont and Greenwood. Mr. Kirby worked on the same tunnel at Prince as George Kincaid, Dollie's father. Does anyone know anything about this Kirby family? I'm hoping it might lead me to who took my brother I've searched in vain for since 1983. Johnnie Rives Kincaid b. 1935, Prince, WV. Think family that took him in 1937 lived near the Kirbys and might have been Hendersons. Help please. All my siblings are deceased except for Dolly Louise. She was b. 1933. 3. Per Glenn's suggestion I'm going to write and tell you about my husband's families that I am researching. We just returned from WV where we attended both the Oxley reunion and the Shrewsbury reunion. I am researching the OXLEY line which I have back to Bluford Oxley (early 1800's) and then his son Daniel Oxley (1854-1917). Any information would be appreciated. I have very little information about this line. I am also researching the SHREWSBURY line. I have quite a large amount of information and would be glad to share what I have and would appreciate any additional. Also researching the WOOD line from Stephen Wood (1720) to John Wood (1745) to Richard Wood (1769) to Peter Wood (1808) to James Nelson Wood (1832) to Martin Green Wood (1860) to Lillie Effie Wood (1885). Lillie Effie was my husband's grandmother. I have much info but will share and can always use more. Thank you -- please forgive my novice message, I'm still trying to learn. Pat Oxley

    1. [WVRALEIG-L] Abraham & Sarah MCMILLION/MCMILLIAN
    2. I am Julius - Tim - Emmett Spradling III at (sprad666@aol.com). Nancy Acord - Greathouse (at jntgreatho@aol.com) & I are third Cousins thru William Calvin ACORD (s/o Robert "Cuddy" ACORD & Nancy GORE - who is related to VP GORE) & his Wife Sarah MCMILLIAN/MCMILLION (hopefully the d/o Abraham MCMILLIAN & Elizabeth "Lizzie" MORRIS). Abraham is most likely a Grandson of Abram MCMILLION & Elizabeth who moved from VA to NC in the late 1770s after their Son Henry was born. Many of the MCMILLIONs moved back to VA (Patrick Co.) in the 1800s. Whether Abraham (born in 1805) was born in NC or VA can probably be answered by one of the group but I am betting on NC where his Wife Elizabeth "Lizzie" MORRIS (d/o ?) was born according to Census information she gave in 1870 & 1880 when she was in Kanawha Co., WV. As I stated above hopefully Sarah is the d/o Abraham & Elizabeth MORRIS. Nancy and I are pursuing various investigations to get proof of this link (even though the circumstantial evidence provided later is pretty strong). We are looking for the Death Certificate of Abraham (died in Kanawha Co., WV between 1870 & 1880 according to Census data that Velpo & Nancy have) & Sarah (died in 1905 in Raleigh Co, WV according to 1900 & 1910 Census info and a death date from an ancestor of Nancy's). Nancy and I both have tried thru the Raleigh Co. Clerk to get a Death Certificate for Sarah but they cannot find one. Nancy physically looked through each and every entry in 1905 for Sarah's death certificate with no luck when she visited Beckley a few months ago. In several reference books on Raleigh County her death is not recorded either. Strange because she was married to a rather famous person in Raleigh Co., William Calvin ACORD (known as Squire), who was involved in politics and lived in the same area all his life (1829-1923). A side note - William Calvin died while getting a hair cut in 1923 in Saxon, Raleigh Co., WV according to Nancy. Nancy is going to check the surrounding Counties for a Death Certificate in case she went to stay with one of her Children before she died. I have written the Kanawha Co. Clerk to find a Death Certificate for Abraham since we now know for sure he died in Kanawha Co. between 1870 - 1880. In the 1880 VA Census Lizzy MCMILLIAN is in the household of her son-in-law Nathaniel Burgess and wife Mary in Kanawha Co. She is listed as 84 yrs old and a widow. If his Wife or Daughter Mary BURGESS supplied information on his Death Certificate regarding his Parents perhaps we can link him to one of the Sons of Abram & Elizabeth. A Will may exist for Abraham at the Archives in the State Capitol in Charleston, WV I visit twice each year to see Family & research Family History. Also a Will may be at Vital Statistics at the Kanawha Co. Court House in Charleston. I will check this out in early Oct. when I make my Fall visit. If we can find a Will for Abraham perhaps he left something to Sarah his first Child (She was born in 1833 - information from various Censuses and Abraham & Elizabeth were married in 1832 and were in Fayette Co., VA in the 1840 VA Census with a 5-10 year old female) and had his Parents listed by his Wife Lizzie (Elizabeth MORRIS). If we can find an obituary for Sarah, since we cannot find a Death Certificate (Nancy is pursuing this in Morgantown, WV at the University Archives I believe) maybe it will mention Parents. HISTORY for Abraham, Lizzie & Sarah MCMILLION/MCMILLIAN: In 1805 Abraham MCMILLION was born according to various Census records. In 1832 Abraham married Elizabeth MORRIS (d/o ? - please comment anyone) born in 1796/1800 according to various Census records. Becky Martin said in a recent e-mail that she had read somewhere there was apparently a border dispute between VA & NC in the late 1700s and early 1800s that may be a reason Elizabeth (called Lizzie) and Abraham had NC & VA listed as places of birth in various Censuses. Sarah MCMILLION stated that her Parents were born in NC in the 1870 & 1900 WV Censuses. In 1833 Sarah MCMILLION was born in VA according to various Census records. In the 1840 VA Census, Robert "Cuddy" ACORD & Nancy GORE (a half-Cousin to VP Al Gore, Jr.), who were the Parents of William Calvin ACORD born in 1829 (who later married Sarah) in Fayette Co., were on the same Census page as Abraham MCMILLION and a Female listed as age 30-40 (assumed to be his Wife Elizabeth - Lizzie) and a Female listed as 5-10 years of age (could be Sarah). William & Sarah (again born in 1833 one year after her possible Parents Abraham & Lizzie MORRIS married in 1832) could be growing up living very close together. Lizzie, born in 1805, would have had Sarah at age 27. There was also a Dudley, Meredith & Henry MCMILLION listed on that same Census page. Henry was the one b. in 1775 and married to Sarah DANIEL (d/o ? - answer anyone please) in 1812 in Patrick Co., VA. He had a 5-10 year old Female in his Household. She would have been to young to have been a d/o Sarah DANIEL b. in the 1780s according to Census data). Dudley had a 5-10 year old Female living in the household, as well as other Male & Female Children since he was married in 1821/24 (I believe). Dudley's Wife Mary (Polly) ALLEN was born in 1793 according to Census information making her 40 if she had Sarah in 1833. ***** Side Note: Nancy reports Dudley is listed as the s/o of Henry and Sarah Daniel (in a Book she found in her recent trip to Raleigh Co. mentioned earlier). This is doubtful information from that book as Dudley was born in 1797 and Henry & Sarah DANIEL were married in 1812. Nancy found Henry is listed as Son of Abram & Elizabeth in the Death Register in Raleigh Co. when he died in 1855. Velpo has also told me that. Nancy indicates Abraham and Abram are interchangable names a lot of times. ***** This information just presented leads me to believe Abraham & Elizabeth "Lizzie" MORRIS are most likely the Parents of Sarah. In 1848 William & Sarah got married at age 15 & 19 in Fayette Co., VA (marriage register data & Census data). A Jno. SPOTTS was the only name mentioned in the register. In 1850 the part of Fayette Co., VA that Abraham MCMILLION & his Wife Elizabeth MORRIS and William Calvin ACORD & his Wife Sarah lived in became Raleigh Co. As Velpo Robertson has said all the MCMILLIONs seemed to be missed in the first Raleigh Co. Census although William & Sarah are present with their first Child. In 1855 Henry MCMILLION (s/o Abram MCMILLION & Elizabeth something) died in Raleigh Co. at age 80 (being born in 1775 in VA) after moving from Patrick Co. before 1840 to Fayette Co., VA. He had married Sarah DANIEL in 1812. Perhaps he married earlier in NC and had other Children. A possibility of that is mentioned below. In the VA Census of 1860 all (Dudley, Meredith, Abraham & Henry T. - Son of Henry & Sarah DANIEL) the MCMILLIONs show up again in the Fayette Co. part of Raleigh Co. that were missed in the 1850 VA Census. William ACORD and Sarah MCMILLION and Children are living in the next household # to Abraham and his Wife Elizabeth MORRIS. Of course if I am right Sarah is living in the next HH# to Her Parents. In the 1870 VA Census Abraham MCMILLION and Elizabeth were now living in Kanawha Co., WV (info from Velpo & verified by Nancy Acord-Greathouse - my third Cousin thru William ACORD & Sarah MCMILLION). The land records might reveal that William & Sarah got the property Abraham & Elizabeth left behind in Raleigh Co. in the next HH# to them (especially if Sarah was Abraham & Elizabeth's Daughter). NEW information my Cousin Nancy just found last week: In the # 91 household in Kanawha Co., WV in 1880 (WV 1880 Census) the following household members and information on them follows: Head of Household - Nathaniel BURGESS, 41; Wife, 36 - Mary; Widow & Mother - In Law, 84, Lizzie MCMILLION. Various Children - Parthena, 18; James, 14; Squire, 12 (which is the name William Calvin ACORD was known as ); Cresey, 10; jno. E., 8; Ida; Minnie; and Peter C. Another member of the household (also in the Abraham & Lizzie HH in the 1870 Census above) is a Millie MORRIS, 51. I assume this must be a niece of Elizabeth's (Lizzie). A puzzle exists as you will see. Lizzie (Elizabeth MORRIS) is 48 years older than her Daughter Mary. I have a feeling Mary was maybe 8-10 years older but was like my Grandmother that was the same age as my Grandfather that consistently fibbed about her age to the Census taker wanting to appear younger than her Husband. My Grandmother only told the truth on her DAR application as I think she probably didn't want to tell any fibs on that application - LOL. In the 1900 WV Census Sarah & William state they have been married 52 years and Sarah gives her age as 67 & William as 71. Sarah states her Parents were born in NC (In the 1880 Census she states they were born in VA). 1905 - Sarah dies in Raleigh Co. (? - can't prove that without a death certificate), WV (info from Nancy Acord-Greathouse). 1923 - William dies in Saxon, Raleigh Co., WV (obituary) POSSIBILITIES: I have three possibilities that Velpo sent me on who might be the Father of Abraham. One is that Abraham, Jr. (proposed Son of Abram MCMILLION & Elizabeth), b. in 1772 has no known Children and could possibly be the Parent. Second, a William MCMILLION was born in the 1770s in the same area where Abram & Elizabeth lived. He may be a s/o Abram MCMILLION & Elizabeth. No information on his Children is known by Velpo. Lastly, Henry (Son of Abram MCMILLION & Elizabeth according to information on the Death Register for Raleigh Co. in 1855 where he died), b. 1775, who married Sarah DANIEL in 1812 in Patrick Co., VA , may have been married earlier in NC (before they moved back to VA) to someone and had Abraham. This last possibility could make sense because Henry could have easily been married earlier than age 37 (born in 1775 & married to Sarah DANIEL in 1812) to someone. I'd LOVE to have a marriage bond for him in NC between say 1795 and 1805 (when Abraham was born). It is possible Dudley MCMILLION (b. 1797) & Meredith MCMILLION (b. 1809), who were in Fayette Co., VA in the 1840 VA Census living in HH#s on the same page as Abraham MCMILLION, Henry MCMILLION & Robert "Cuddy" ACORD were Sons of Henry too from this earlier marriage. After all he had moved to Fayette Co., VA by that time with Sarah to possibly be close to his Boys. THEORY: If Abraham was born to Henry & a first Wife and she died in say 1809 after Meredith was born, Abraham would have only been only 4 and wouldn't have had much of a chance to bond & identify with his real Mother. He may have done that with Sarah DANIEL in 1812 though when Henry married her. It could have been that Abraham & Elizabeth MORRIS named their first Child born one year after they married in 1832 Sarah after the only Mother Abraham remembered. I know, that's quite a stretch but I don't have any info on Abraham, JR.'s Children. And of course it was a common practice to name your Children after your Brother's, their Uncles. Thus Dudley would have been named for his Uncle Dudley b. in 1782 and Meredith after a Brother of Abram (A grand uncle)?. Who knows - all guesses. Would invite ALL comments & corrections. 3. Valerie, My father, Elmo Jordan JOHNSON, worked in the coal mines before I was born. I just found out the other day the name of the company he may have worked for. Peerless Eagle Coal Company, Peters Creek, WV is the name of the place. I have no idea how to find more information. My grandfather General "Floyd" Jordan JOHNSON also worked in the mines. I'm also unsure of details on this. I know my grandfather developed black lung he died of lung cancer in March ,weighing ahout 85-90 lbs., my father also died in July 1985 at the age of 63, from lung, liver, pancreas cancer and at the end brain cancer. Really I didn't want to get going on the reasons for their deaths, this is what I know of the coal mines though and how it affects your life, whether you die in a cave in or later on in years from a long and painful death. If anyone has any suggestions please email. Thanks, Donna JOHNSON Faucheaux -----Original Message----- From: Valerie F. 3. Hi Dianna, I'm sending this to the list as there may be others that wish to submit a memorial or biography. So far, only one person has submitted a memorial besides myself. I would just write a short bio like: "My grandfather, John Jones, worked in the SuchNSuch mine in West Virginia. He was killed/injured/lucky to escape without injury on this date....He was married to SoNSo and had this many children, and that many grandchildren. " I know this is a VERY vague bio, but you can put as much information as you wish. Or you can share a story about your coal miner ancestor. When we pass our grandfather's stories onto our children, isn't that paying tribute? I think it is. :) Hope this helps!
