    1. [WVRALEIG-L] County of origin? ATKINSON, ADKINS, ADKISSON, etc.
    2. I'm searching for information on the following Raleigh County, (W)VA family: Raleigh Co., 1850 Census, p. 7, Microfilm page 4A, 10 July 1850. 49 Daniel Adkinson 41 M Farmer 500 Va Sarah Adkinson 33 Va Eliza Adkinson 10 Va Ellen Adkinson 7 Va Maria Adkinson 6 Va Francis Adkinson twin 4 Va John Adkinson twin 4 Va Isaac Adkinson 2 Va UNCONFIRMED: John ADKINSON (twin, 04 Age 1850) is believed to be John Sauner ATKINSON (my gr-grandfather), b. 17 Oct 1845 (probably Fayette Co., (W)VA); d. 02 March 1915 in the Leyland Mine explosion in Fayette Co., WV. He is buried in the East Bank Cemetery, East Bank, Kanawha Co., WV. He married Mary Martha "Molly" MCGARY on 07 May 1874, Fayette Co., WV. I do not have anything more on the marriage, as the information is gleaned from an early family bible. In a 1985 handwritten note from my late mother, C.F. Atkinson, she has named Daniel Atkinson as John's father, and Sarah (surname unknown) as his mother. Unfortunately, I didn't find the note until after her death, and I did not find any records in her belongings that would clarify this information. She also writes: "[John's] residence at time of marriage was Greenbrier Co., WV." About John Sauner Atkinson's wife, Mary Martha "Molly" McGary, she writes: "Her residence at time of marriage was Fayette Co., WV." It is believed that Mariah ADKINSON (06 Age 1850) married Van Buren BOWYER in Fayette Co., WV. NOTES: Fayette Marriages 1830-1870 by Pauline Haga 1865 Dec 28-- BOWYER, Van Buren, 25, b. Fayette Co., son of William and Mary J. BOWYER, and Mariah ATKINSON, 22, born Fayette, daughter of David and Sarah ATKINSON, married by Martin BIBB. I have yet to determine that the 1850 Daniel ADKINSON is my own great-great- grandfather, but evidence points to that possibility. My ATKINSON/ADKINSON (and other spelling variants) seem to appear in Fayette, Greenbrier, Kanawha, and Raleigh Counties. I suspect that they didn't move around much, but that the state and county boundaries did. <grin> I would appreciate hearing from anyone who might know anything about any of the people mentioned with Daniel ADKINSON in the 1850 Census for Raleigh Co., (W)VA. What is Sarah's maiden name? Whom did their children marry? Anything, even the smallest hint, might help me pin this family down a bit better, and determine if I'm even on the correct track. Any assistance on this family would be deeply appreciated. THANKS! Lainie Hendrix

At least I thought this way until now. >> Sherranlynn, It would have been a bit easier if you had copied the DATE of my letter as well as my comments and questions...I wrote that query more than a week prior to your return to things, and before anyone knew of the serious nature of your own problems and why you had been away for so long. As you must now see, I have not made any "impatient" overtures since asking that first opening question BEFORE you responded. You were gone a long time, no one seemed to be able to write to you, and none of us knew that you were involved with an ill child until you responded. My own daughter has an inoperable brain tumor, so I know how horridly stressful these last few months have been for you. I can only wish you and your family well. By the way, I try not to clutter up the lists with thank-yous, etc. I understand full well the stress those kinds of messages put on the Rootsweb equipment. I hate to respond to this now, in this manner, but I kinda feel like I needed to speak up for myself. Part of the problem many listers have is with the "Reply To" portion of the many lists....often they are set so that any response is automatically sent to the list, even if someone wishes to respond privately. Example (just one, and there are many more like this on the several lists to which I belong): Subj: Re: [WVRALEIG-L] Sherranlynn, Please update your address on the Ral. Co. page. Date: 3/1/99 10:52:52 PM Mountain Standard Time From: skincaid@worldnet.att.net (Sherranlynn Kincaid Nichols) Reply-to: WVRALEIG-L@rootsweb.com To: WVRALEIG-L@rootsweb.com It would be helpful to Rootsweb if all the lists removed the automatic REPLY TO that forces responses back onto the list. It would be so much better if the REPLY TO was linked to the originating author rather than to the list itself. Some of the lists I'm on do carry such a feature, and it is SOOOOO much easier to make private responses and thank yous with that feature. Sincerely, Lainie Hendrix

    3. Some people are very impatient with me at this time. This is the time I need to be able to take my time to do the things that need to be done. I will update the pages as I can and also get caught up on my mail. You can help by being patient and using the lists for genealogy only and not for just communicating with others to say thanks etc. That generates much mail to go through and besides all the returned e-mails I receive for various reasons from the subscribers to all the lists. I know some of you are concerned about my not updating the site recently. I can't believe some of the attitudes. I have many plans for the GenWeb site, but give me some slack people. 3. Melissa: As I don't think I have any documents to offer to Raleigh, or at least nothing much, I'll offer my typing services to anyone that needs something transcribed. They get the credit for it, NOT ME. I type fast and really don't mind doing it. If someone has a document they would like transcribed, just email me privately and I will give them my address and they can either send me a copy, or I have a FAX or if they have a scanner available, they can even scan and send to me via email. 1. [WVRALEIG-L] Upload Contest Clarification
    2. Melissa Duggins
    3. Evening Folks, After consulting with wiser souls than I, I have come to the conclusion that we need to have two categories for this contest. The first winner will be based on total number of submissions. The second winner will be decided by total file size of submissions. It was pointed out to me that it takes a lot longer to type up a cemetery listing for example versus a marriage record. On the other hand, I realize that many of us don't have the time to transcribe large numbers of records at once, and I didn't want to penalize anyone for that. So whether you really can send in the entire Raleigh Co. Death Index or just have a lot of miscellaneous records from your family, send it in! There's a category for you. The winners from each category will each receive the book of their choice. If you have any questions about what can be submitted, please ask and remember that there are no "unimportant" submissions! ~Melissa -- "Raleigh County Roots" http://millennium.fortunecity.com/rose/505/index.html Please consider submitting one piece of data to the Raleigh County Archives http://www.rootsweb.com/usgenweb/wv/raleigh.htm

    3. Jeannie, Hmmm....I hadn't thought of that. I would say number of submissions, but if someone comes up with a really massive submission with a lot of information in it - like someone sends in the entire Raleigh Co. Death Index :-), I'll bite the bullet and I'll buy two books - one for the person with most submissions and the one with the largest contribution. Does that seem fair? Thoughts?
