The only thing I have on Harrison is he wabor abt 1839 and md Mary Ann Stover. His mother was Nancy Stover. She was married to John Wriston for her second marraige. I don't know who her Stover husband was. Harrison and his brother Alfred are living with their step-father John Wriston and Nancy in the 1860 census. That's about all I know, and have been trying to find a father for him too, as I am trying to line up all these Raleigh Co Stovers, but it is sure a difficult job. :) Gracie RShrew4733@aol.com wrote: > > Hi all! This message is from: Frieda Davison <fdavison@sunmuw1.MUW.Edu> Good morning, list members, I am Frieda Patrick Davison. I grew up in Russell Co., Va., but am interested in Raleigh County research because my Dad worked in the coal mines in Ameagle and Kingston. I am in the process of writing a book and would love to make contact with anyone who might have known my Dad or a descendent of someone who worked with him. The names below are taken from the work history that he wrote when he was trying to get his black lung benefits. My Dad's name was Clyde Anderson Patrick During 1931-1933, he worked at Ameagle Coal Mine, Ameagle Collieries Mining Co., Ameagle, W.Va. Here are the names that he mentions from that mine: Armstrong, Dutch Busby, Ben Busby, Bessie (wife of Ben) (actually this is my aunt -- Daddy's sister. She is still living, but would like to make contact with anyone who might have known her or Uncle Ben). Cash, J. Chapman (Called Chap) Superintendent of the mines "Cooper" -- Daddy didn't remember this man's full name. In fact we don't even know if this was his first or last name. He did remember that he was "rough". Daddy said Cooper would cuss the mountain above them as they mined. Daddy said it always scared him when Cooper would do this, that it was just tempting God. Garbo (Called Garby) -- Daddy didn't remember this man's first name, but they were "buddies", meaning that they worked in the same room in the mine. Hughes -- Don't know this man's first name and he may have worked at Kingston rather than Ameagle. Lasley, Carl (also seen as Lesley) Section foreman McGinnis, Albert (ran the Post Office at White Oak) Norris, Jim (also seen as Narse) Perry, Marvin Perry, Dolly (wife of Marvin) Daddy boarded with the couple for awhile and also worked with Marvin. Stover, Arnold Stover, Denzil (dated Juanita Patrick -- another aunt of mine) Stover, Eunice (wife of Mose) Stover, Jeeter Stover, Mose Stover, Roy Stover, Wilburn (married daughter of Elijah Stover) Daddy said all these Stover's were children of two brothers but he didn't remember their names. He also boarded with Mose and Eunice Stover for awhile. Treadway, Nelson (preacher) Watson, Bernard A. (African American who was killed in a mine accident in 1934). Daddy helped recover the body. He said this was the first dead person he ever touched. During 1934-1935, Daddy worked at Kingston/Pocahontas Coal Mine, Kingston, W.Va. Hughes (may have worked at Ameagle) -- see above. Seabolt, Donald. Daddy and Donald were great friends but lost touch over the years. Any information on any of these folks would be thrilling. Frieda
Hi Nyla; I only have one Hendricks. My uncle Ralph Stover was married to Irene Inez Hendrick, don't know her date of birth but she died Jan 1, 1988 in Ravenswood. Her parents were George Hendrick and Romanza Clay. Ralph and Irene were from Raleigh Co though, and two of my favorite relatives. :) Romanza Clay was from Masseyville. This is all I have, does Aunt Irene fit in with your Hendrix or Hendricks??? Gracie NCreed1@aol.com wrote: > > << Thank you, Nyla, for the great info. Hi; Welcome to our group. :) All I have on my Wards is Isaac Scarboro married Mary Ward (my direct line ancestors) in Orange Co, VA abt 1733 Mary was born 2 Jun 1754 in Orange Co. This date may not be correct though. Her parents were:John Ward and Anne Chiles John was born about 1710 and died 23 Dec 1782 in Bedford Co, VA I don't know if the Raleigh Co Wards are connected to Mary ward my ancestor or not. and would be very interested if we find out they were connected.... Does anyone else have information to help her? Gracie DORABROWN@aol.com wrote: > > Hello Gracie, > I am new to the list and I am just beginning to research my husband's family > in Raleigh Co. I have an Amelia Blankenship, born about 1774 and died in 1854 in Boone County, md to a John Scott from Kanawha county. (The Boone co census for my Nancy Scott said she was born in Kanawha County) Gracie DDenton189@aol.com wrote: > > Sandy: > Do you have an Amelia Blankenship in your line?
Hi; Actually I dont' know if I am related to Isaac or not yet..... One of my cousins and I am having problems with our Scotts. :) I am a direct descendant of Lewis Stover(s/o Obediah Stover) and Nancy Scott. They were married on 27 Apr 1847 in Fayette Co., WV We have a copy of the marraige certificate, but it does not give the name of her parents.. She is our brick wall. According to the Boone Co census, she would have been born about 1830. Although listed in the Boone Co Census, it was still Raleigh Co, as when you leave Boone Co into Raleigh you turn at the first road on the left, and at the beginning of this 'holler' is a place called Jarrold's Valley that they are living....This is Clear Creek 'holler' where the Stover family is from....But when you turn up that 'holler' there is a little turn across a bridge to Jarold's Valley, -so I guess technically it could be called Boone County. :) Anyway,, Nancy is a brick wall for us... She is with Lewis Stover in 1870, but only Lewis and the children are in the household in 1880. So she must have died during this 10 year period. The closest we can come is this; From "Early Deaths of Raleigh Co, WV 1853-1875" by Pauline Haga Nancy Stover, 35 died Dec 24, 1872 at Clear Fork of heart disease. Dau of ____ and Elizabth Allen. Lewis Stover was husband. If this is our Nancy, then the age must be wrong as she would have had to have been 10 years old when she married Lewis. Evidently the record was illigible and so you can't tell who her father was, but it looks to me like her mother's maiden name may have been Elizabeth Allen So far, the Stover researchers don't have any other Lewis Stover that married a Nancy, or if so we havn't found it yet.... So I am thinking (but can't be sure) that this is our Nancy Scott, and the age is just wrong... Hi; Unfortunately I don't have a Caleb Allen. My Allen line is from Carroll Co, VA and then moved to Logan/Wyoming County. Hi Marcia; I don't have your surnames as direct line, but they do tend to show up upon occasion whenever they tie in with my Raleigh Co families. :) Whitesville is actually in Boone Co, but right on the border. As soon as you leave Whitesville, the first 'holler' on the left is ClearCreek and where my Stover line originated. I grew up in a place called Packsville, which is in Raleigh Co, but only about a mile from the Boone/Raleigh Co line and the little town of Whitesville, Gracie ANDREW R HILTON wrote: > > Hi Gracie and All: > > Was born in Hazy, Raleigh Co. and lived there (and Edwight) until we moved > to Mi at my age of 11. Hi Andrew; This was not a problem...If it's about places in Raleigh County, as well as the people, then it IS allowed, as some of the others may have known about this place too. :) I have it set where when you hit reply, it goes back to the list and not to the person who sends the message, so I can understand these 'accidents'. :) So, it was more my fault for the way I have the settings. If any of you would like me to change that, just let me know. Although, I am enjoying seeing everyone talking with one another...:) Sometimes when you are talking about a certain family, even if the others are not researching that certain family, a bit of that information might accidently help someone else since these Raleigh Co families have so many connections to each other, Gracie Gracie ANDREW R HILTON wrote: > > Group, Sorry I sent a personal message to all by mistake. > > Marcia Green Hilton
<< Thank you, Nyla, for the great info. I did not have all the spouses nor some of the dates. Where do you fit into the Tyree line? >> I'm don't really. I am a Dickens descendant. So that is probably the reason I have the info. But it could be because I am interested in the Bailey family although I am not a Bailey descendant. I just collect Raleigh County families. I'm convinced it is next to impossible to research the Williams family and ignore the other families. Even if I'm not related to a particular family, you can almost guess they are related to someone that is related to me. Still looking for these families: Atha, Dickens, Turner, Williams, Hendricks/Hendrix, Arnold, Wiseman, and Raleigh Co families who were in the 1850 Raleigh Co census.
Following is a list of places I have found that have information about the Coal Mines in West Virginia. If any of you find other sources, please send them to me. So I can add them to this list, and I will be working on a list to put at the site that will have places for people to look for mining information. The State Archives at (304)558-0220 , ext. 151 or 168 for the Archives Library desks. has some mining information. Another place is the Eastern Regional Coal Archives in Bluefield, WV. The man in charge there is named Stuart McGehee, but he teaches in Institute, WV during the school year. Eva McGuire is another contact there. They are at the Craft Memorial Library, 600 Commerce St., Bluefield, WV 24701, and their phone is (304)325-3942. Another archive is the UMWA Archives in Washington D.C. Their address is 900 15th Street NW, Washington D.C. 20005 This site: http://www.swcp.com/~dhickman/wvcmf/wvcmf.html tells about the Index of Fatalities in West Virginia Coal Mines 1883-1925, which has been microfilmed by the LDS Library Goldenseal Magazine at: http://www.wvlc.wvnet.edu/culture/goldensl.html These are the pages at the WV Coal Mining Site at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~wvcoal/ that have some information, and if anyone has any further information about coal mining in West Virginia or if you know of places to look, then please email me so I can put that information up for others at the coal mining site for West Virginia. Books to Purchase at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~wvcoal/purchase.html Lookup volunteers at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~wvcoal/look.html Mining Disasters at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~wvcoal/disaster.html The WV Coal mining site also has a queries board, and a section for memorials to miners if anyone would like to write a little bio or put pictures of their relative that worked in the mines, Gracie
