    3. Sandy, I sent copies of pictures to the person in charge of the reunion for the year I graduated At the reunions they go through them and they can be identified. Do you have the name of person who is in charge of that year? Yes it is/was 4-H. Spent many days and some evenings there. I to have pictures from there. We also had family picnics there and a lot of school outings. I have a box of pictures from my Uncle Wilbur West basement and no names. He tried to help me before he died but they are Raleigh and Wyoming County. I have other relatives trying to help me. Pauline Haga has a copy of one of them to put on the cover of one of her books. What upsets me is to find pictures cut up. People cut out. I just got a picture from my best friend in Beckley of me, Nancy Burditus and her [Ann Richmond] Taken at the park in Beckley back in 1949. We have our jeans rolled up and our saddles on.. I can get you a contact for the reunion if you need it..Norma Straughan Russie. 1. Raleigh County Mortality Schedules
    2. segura
    3. Hi all, I was at the local library (in the flatlands of Nebraska) and found several books of Mortality schedules for WV. I couldnt write all the names down, but here are the Raleigh county names I did get: Schedule for 1880: columns are: name - county died - age at death - sex - month died - state born - cause of death Dickens, Dialpha; Raleigh; 23 days; F; Aug; WV; croup Lilly,Charles; raleigh; 6 yr; m; WV; may; worms Lilly, Charles; Raleigh; 6 yr; m; apr; Diptheria (poss same as above??) Meadows, Jeremiah R.; Raleigh; 7 mo; M; Jan; WV; Diptheria Meadows, Maoney; Raleigh 3mo; F; Sep: WV; Bold hives Stover, Charles; Raleigh; 44 yr;M; Nov; WV; Dropsy Stover, Henriette;Raleigh; 1yr; F; Nov; WV; Bold Hives Stover, Lewis; Raleigh; 20 days; M.; Feb; WV; pertussis The mortality schedule was taken by the census taker. The people listed on the roster were to have died within the year befor the census poll was taken. So, if the month listed is after june/jul then you can assume the year of death was 1879. rebecca lilly

    2. Hi Everyone, Had to comment on the labeling of old photographs - PLEASE DO IT My deceased relatives left many unlabeled photos that we are trying to discover the identity of & I work in an auction gallery & see many hundreds of old photos come through that if they had names on I would purchase & try to find descendents who would want them. If you have any older relatives & have any influence on them ask them to allow you to assist in labeling those precious pictures now while they still can. Ellie

    2. Hi Gracie & All, Thought I would send a copy of what I sent to Dora about the Wards in hopes someone else may see something there that will help them or get them involved in our hunt. I am also researching Weikle/Wikle/Wykle/Wical - you get the picture, we have found nearly 30 different spellings of the name <G>... The Wards, Weikles & related families are found in Monroe, Summers, Raleigh, Greenbrier Counties & beyond. I am more than happy to assist anyone who has connections to these families, I have printed off many messages with connecting names lately but have been tied up with 2 family deaths & working overtime so have not taken time yet to write but I will. Keep up the good work & Thanks! Ellie Subj: Re: Wards, McVeys - Raleigh County Date: 3/12/99 10:44:16 PM Eastern Standard Time From: W W IRISES To: DORA BROWN Hi Dora, Our husbands are 3rd cousins once removed, my husband Darrell is son of Arzula D. I am willing to share everything I have with you on the Wards, would appreciate it if you brought me up to date on your husbands line by filling in & or correcting info for me. Robert Ward, Sr. born about 1770 (in Va we think) he married Nancy Smailes Dec 3, 1804 in Shenandoah Co, Va Robert lived on Little Beaver Creek in Greenbrier Co. Robert was in War of 1812 - Pvt. 58th Regiment under Capt. Samuel Lynn in Rockingham Co, VA. He was fined 75 cents for failure to show up for musters in 1815 & 1816 in Rockingham County, VA. In the 1820 census, Rockingham County there is a Benjamin Ward living next door to Robert - possibly a brother. Info from typed account of the Wards by Sharon Ward-Hart 1985 - - Sometime around 1828 Robert & Nancy moved to Greenbrier County, Va. June 11, 1828 Robert bought 3120 acres (three tracts) of land from Stephen Goodhue of New Hampshire (Bk 12 pg 78) The land was in Greenbrier County on the north side of the New River, including part of War Ridge. An old newspaper clipping says he settled along Little Beaver Creek. According to Fayette County History by J.T. Peters & H.B. Carden pg 548 Robert Ward & Enos Gwinn were the second settlers to settle on Bacus mountain then known as Naoma. Robert settkled on the ridge in a south-westerly direstion. They built log homes & cleard land for corn. On Feb 23, Robert & Nancy sold to Nathaniel Berry 100 acres at the end of War Ridge on New River. (Fayette Co Book B 461). On July 9, 1846 Robert (no mention of wife) sold to Wm. Gwinn for the sum of $1.00 1120 cares on the New River (Fayette Co. C 689) Since some of his children show up in Lawrence County OH on the 1850 census he may have been preparing to move to Ohio. August 25, 1858 his heirs listed as Robert Ward, G.L. Ward, Adam Miller, Winsom Davenport, Thomas Ward & William Parker sold 100 acres on the New River to Wm. Redden, Jr. for $15.00. The deed was drawn up in Lawrence County Ohio & filed in Fayette County. Wm. Redden may have been the husband of Sarah (Salley) Ward & a son-in-law to Robert. 3. Hi Cousins and all, Crab Orchard borders Beckley city limits on WV Route 16, Sophia is the next town and to get to Coal City turn off on to a small county road in Sophia. This road will go through Coal City and then on to Ghent. Now I don't mind letting any one know where a place is, but here is a very expensive way to check out the small towns and coal camps which are not on most highway maps. I have sets for Wyoming, Raleigh and Mercer Counties. I grew up in that "neck of the woods" but these maps help me find the places I remembered. Also, strip mining and logging work has destroyed a lot of the old roads we travel when I was a child. The best map I have came from the West Virginia Division of Highways Department in Charleston, WV. Now the Chamber of Commerce sends out a Beckley map with a Raleigh County map on the back, but the other ones has more detail. when I got mine (about 10 years ago) they were only $1.00 per sheet, but it is best to write first for the cost of the County map requested. Also, might you know if they had more than seven children? I have their last born as Manda, b. ca. 1848 (from the Raleigh 1850 Census, with my thanks to Terry Collins!!!). Were there more children? Just fillin' in the blanks! Lainie

    2. Gracie, The Harrison I am researching was born on June 14, 1895 and was the son of Otis Stover and Geneva Rose. I know he was still in Clear Creek until the 1920's. My grandfather was born in 1916 and remembered he was around until the mid to late '20's. I do know that Harrison had been married prior to his relationship with my ggrandmother and his wife had died. I have a picture of him, thanks to a great friend I met over the net, in which he is wearing a military uniform. His disappearance is a big mystery to his family. His sisters Locke and Verge claimed they never heard from him after his disappearance. I would be thrilled to find some closure to this 70 odd years old mystery! Any info anyone could share would be greatly appreciated.
