I am trying to reach Shirley Parchman. She has posted several items at the website but her e-mail address seems to be invalid now. Is there any way you could help me get in contact with her. It seems we share common great grandparents. Thanks. Alicia Maynor Griffin
Hi All, I am looking for any information at all about my great grandparents on my father's side. It seems as if they never existed! Other than a couple of graves and a few pictures I am at a loss. Surely someone in Raleigh County knew of them. Anything, no matter how trivial it may seem, would be great. They are John William Evans, 1870-1930, buried in Estep Cemetery & Molly Arminta Elkins, 1883-1962, also in Estep Cemetery. They were married March 29, 1902. They had 11 children. Myrtle, Pearl, Maudie, Beulah, John, Lonnie, Alonza, Charles, Carl, Andrew & Harry. John also had two children from a previous marriage, Mary & Thomas. I think his first wife was Ona Davis. I am told that Molly, always refereed to in the family as "Miss Elkins", last lived in Whitesville. In fact the house has been pointed out to me several times. John was born in Jamestown TN & Molly in Wyoming Co. WV. John's parents are Samuel Evans & Mary Catherine Davis. Molly's being Edward Emerson "Ed" Elkins & Nancy Beaulah Belle Fortner. I have had a little success on the Elkins side. But the Evans side seems to be a black hole! Any help would be very much appreciated. One last thing, thanks to all that have helped me in the past from this list. I have learned so much about the family from you. Regards, Jeff Evans

Jackson was the son of John S. Williams and Mary "Polly" Griffith. John S. was the son of Jeremiah Williams and Mary Garst. Tradition says Jeremiah was from Wales. I have no proof of that, however. Margaret Susan Williams was the dtr of George Stafford Williams and Mary "Polly" Reynolds. George Stafford was the son of Michael Williams and Margaret "Peggy" Williams. Michael was the son of George Henry (Wilhelm) Williams and Margaret Harless. George Henry was the son of Johan Heinrich Wilhelm (John Henry Williams). The Wilhelm's were from Germany, according to tradition. I have no proof of that, however. Hope this helps. Nyla

The son of a coal miner was from Marfork in Raleigh County. The son of a sharecropper was from Arkansas. The son of a coal miner got out of the mines by joining the military. The son of a sharecropper got out of the fields by doing the same. The son of a coal miner fought in Korea. The son of a sharecropper was a peacetime soldier. The son of a coal miner was wild in his youth and this spilled over into his first years of marriage -- the drinking, gambling and carousing. The son of a sharecropper was addicted to drugs. The son of a coal miner and the son of a sharecropper would eventually walk the straight and narrow, thanks to God and a good woman's unconditional love. The son of a coal miner loved country music. The son of a sharecropper sang it. The son of a coal miner led a private life as Daddy. The son of a sharecropper was "the Man in Black." The son of a coal miner and the son of a sharecropper were distant cousins, but neither knew it. Therein lies the tragedy! Sincerely, Mike Peters [email protected]
Hi all, Hoping someone may have some information on my great grandfather. His name is John William Evans. He was born in 1870 in Jamestown Tn. He was married two times. Once to Ona Davis. They had two children, Mary & Thomas. With his second wife, Molly Elkins, they had 11. Mrytle, Pearl, Maudie, Beulah, John, Lonnie, Alonza, Charles, Carl, Andrew & Harry(my grandfather). I know that they lived in Dorthy. My grandfather, Harry, was in the Clearfork High class of 43 or 44. They lived on the west side of Coal River which is now all gone and grown over. I am told they once had many stores and even a movie theater there! I also know that Molly Elkins-Evans lived in a small house in Whitesville when she died. The house is still there. I am told that John William Evans was a "Big Wig" with the railroad. I am pretty sure he worked on the railroad as I have a picture of him with a crew of men on a rail car. The Evans side of my family is a big black hole! Unfortunately all my grandfather's brothers & sisters, including him 1926-1983, are gone. It seems that my grandmother did not have to much contact with the Evans side . So she only knows bits & pieces. Thanks again to all that have answered my previous e-mails. You all have been a tremendous help. Jeff Evans

Hi All, Thanks for all the information that so many of you have given. It is wonderful to have so much help from so many on the Raleigh County web page. I was wondering if anyone may have any information on my Grandmother's grandparents from her mother's side. They were G.E. William Stanley (1865-1919) and Callie Belle Parker (1869-1928). I do not know where either is from. I do know that both are buried in Oddfellow Cemetary in Dorthy. Their last address was on Clearfork Road in Dorthy. They had the following children that I know of, Bessie, George, Guy, Hazel, Inice, Nena & Nellie. Thanks so much. Regards, Jeff
