My ggg grandfather is Jordan N. Peters is listed in the 1850 census for Raleigh County, VA/WV. I am attempting to document his middle name. I have seen Jordan's middle name listed as both "Nichols" & "Nicholas," Finding nothing on Jordan himself listing his middle name, I decided to check on those in our family that were named for this gentleman. My grandfather's brother was named Jordan N. Peters. We just called him "Don." My great grandfather, Daniel Peters, also had a brother named Jordan N. Peters. I decided to look at these descendants of the elder Jordan to see if I can find information on their middle name & therefore solve the mystery. Kirk Dickens in his Dickens family history books lists all three Jordan N. Peters as Jordan "Nicholas" Peters. "Raleigh County West Virginia Marriages 1850-1898" transcribed by Ronald Ray Turner lists the marriage of Jordan Peters to Macy Webb on 29 April 1892 and lists this Jordan's middle name as "Nickols." Thinking he was transcribing based on the actual marriage record, I thought I had found documentation. But a copy of the actual marriage log shows the nuptial in question to be between Macy Webb & Jordan N. Peters, without benefit of a middle name. Now, the actual marriage license might list him as Jordan "Nickols" Peters. I have not seen the document in question. What information would lead Turner to write his middle name as "Nickols?" Would he have been privy to the actual marriage license? What does Pauline Haga write of this marriage? Jordan N. "Don" Peters, the brother of my grandfather, married Erma O' Connor in the 1920s & Mamie Lee sometime later. I am unaware of the dates & location of these marriages, but expect the location of both to be Raleigh County. Does anyone have information re: these marriages, something that might shed a light on this Jordan's middle name? Thank you in advance for any information. I look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely, Mike Peters [email protected]

Hope all are enjoying the nice weekend, I am looking for any information on my great grandmother Molly Elkins-Evans and or my great grandfather John William Evans. Molly last lived in a small house in downtown Whitesville. I suspect she moved there some time after my grandfather, Harry Vinson Evans, went off to fight in WWII. This would have been in 1944. Before that they lived in Dorthy in Raleigh County. John was born in Jamestown Tn. May 5th. 1870 and died the 27th. of July 1930. They are both buried in Estep Cemetery in Raleigh Co. Molly was born the 16th of February 1883 in Wyoming Co Wv. and died the 24th of September 1962 in Charleston. My may focus right now is on the Evans side as I have been able to collect a good bit on the Elkins side. But any info at all would be great. Thanks so much, Jeff Evans

I would like to see more of our BrickWalls. Maybe we can help each other get past some of them. My own is Obediah Stover. I have the following clues: 1. PITTSYLVANIA COUNTY DEED BOOK 4 (1774-1778) Page 145. Oct. 22, 1774 from Obediah Stover of Pittsylvania County, to Solomon Davis of Pittsylvania County, for 10 pounds, one certain tract of land in Pittsylvania on the head branches of Pigg River, and bounded by Jeremiah Hall, about 150 acres. Signed, Obediah (X his mark) Stover. Wit: James Stewart, Sr., James ( I his mark) Stewart Jr., Lexrous ( I his mark ) Hardin. Recorded May 25, 1775 (To have owned land in 1774, he would have to have been at least 21 yrs old, so born 1753. Too old to have been the son of Jacob or the son of Jeremiah Stover.) 2. This Obediah, the 'elder' (I will call him) shows up again in 1809 17 Apr Patrick Co VA - Obadiah and Jacob Stover Jeremiah Stoner(Stover), open accounts, estate of Jesse Corn. So this places Obediah 'the Elder' with Jacob and Jeremiah in Patrick Co, as the younger Obediah is still in Franklin Co, and marries Massea Stanley in 1809 in Franklin Co. 3. In Giles Co, VA(which is now Raleigh Co) - after Jacob moves there and buys land, there is also a purchase by an Obediah Stover. "Giles Survey Bk. 1, pg. 217, 219 Jacob, Sr. & Obediah Stover.....Cole River, Lick Cr. 1813, 1814" Obediah Stover, s/o Jacob who md Massea Stanley was still in Franklin Co, Va during this time. He is listed in the Franklin Co, Va census in 1820 and on 5 Jul 1813 signs as the surety for the marraige of John Bell Bailey to his sister-in-law, Sarah Stanley. Obediah, the younger, who md Massea does not show up in the same area as the other Stovers in WV until the 1830 census. In 1840, his widow Massea is alone. So, I beleive that the 'elder' Obediah may have gone to Giles with Jacob Stover. Jacob's son Obediah was not there during this time, he was still in Franklin County. Who was this Obediah Stover, and what happened to him? Perhaps he died in Raleigh before they started registering deaths? Also, the younger Obediah Stover, s/o Jacob Stover and Sallie McGhee, he is my ancestor twice. I have found no record of his death or of his wife's death. Does anyone have anything on that? Thank you, Gracie

Hi All, I am looking for any information at all about my great grandparents on my father's side. It seems as if they never existed! Other than a couple of graves and a few pictures I am at a loss. Surely someone in Raleigh County knew of them. Anything, no matter how trivial it may seem, would be great. They are John William Evans, 1870-1930, buried in Estep Cemetery & Molly Arminta Elkins, 1883-1962, also in Estep Cemetery. They were married March 29, 1902. They had 11 children. Myrtle, Pearl, Maudie, Beulah, John, Lonnie, Alonza, Charles, Carl, Andrew & Harry. John also had two children from a previous marriage, Mary & Thomas. I think his first wife was Ona Davis. I am told that Molly, always refereed to in the family as "Miss Elkins", last lived in Whitesville. In fact the house has been pointed out to me several times. John was born in Jamestown TN & Molly in Wyoming Co. WV. John's parents are Samuel Evans & Mary Catherine Davis. Molly's being Edward Emerson "Ed" Elkins & Nancy Beaulah Belle Fortner. I have had a little success on the Elkins side. But the Evans side seems to be a black hole! Any help would be very much appreciated. One last thing, thanks to all that have helped me in the past from this list. I have learned so much about the family from you. Regards, Jeff Evans
