Also, Mike's Remembrances and my own site. :) I will be posting some more photos people have sent me on the site in the next few days, Gracie .

Hi; I am very pleased to see all the talk on the list today. Jim Wood's book is very good, and an excellant source. And, it's good to see the different Raleigh Co surnames talked about on the list. As Nyla suggested, the Raleigh County Website can always use more material, articles, photos, charts, etc. Nyla's site can be accessed through the Raleigh Co site, and vice versa. Also, Mike's Remembrances and my own site. :) I will be posting some more photos people have sent me on the site in the next few days, Gracie
they are still here. There are a lot of them now a days. They are just like everyone else, they produced just like we did. I have a cousin married to one of them. Dee
Was it on the corner of Kanawha and Heber St? If so it has moved down the block a little. It is located between Kanawha and Prince Street. And yes the Letters is still up there. They still broadcast from there and they now have a sister station. Dee
I wonder if Tamarack at Beckley has Jim Wood's book? Just a thought. That's where I bought mine about three years ago. I see in Jim Wood's "Raleigh County Mine Deaths 1891-2000" that book can be ordered from BJW Printing & Office Supplies. 304-253-7361 or 800-553-3184.
The Radio Station is still there and that is the name of it still. There used to be a beauty shopp right beside of it but they moved to Shady Springs. Dee

Nyla: I sure hope so. I don't get any commissions from his book sales. But I get a lot of enjoyment from studying his book. It makes me feel a lot closer to my Dad's people. I believe that should be the criteria for studying family history. And if that's the case, than we have found the perfect textbook in Jim Wood's "Raleigh County, West Virginia. Did you know we had both Union and Confederate soldiers from Raleigh County? Brothers were fighting against brothers. Nyla: Many example of family against family are found in the book. As you & others know, Cook & Shumate are two of my families. Pemberton Cook & Ruth Shumate are my direct line. Pemberton rode with the 7th WV Cavalry. Their sons Andrew & Daniel, also Union soldiers died during the war. Ruth's family was Confederate. 2 of her brothers spent time in Camp Chase prison. Daniel Shumate died there. And there are countless other stories like this one that happened in Raleigh County. Theodore Lang called West Virginia a "child of the storm, born amid the throes of war." WV was unique. It seceded as part of the Commonwealth of VA at the beginning of the hostilities and then halfway through the conflict left the Confederacy to became part of the Union -- again. This only exacerbated the problem. IMHO, the only place in the country that rivaled the amount of kinfolk vs. kinfolk may have been Kansas & Missouri. Sincerely, Mike Peters [email protected]
Thanks and nice to see your online and answered so quick
No it is still there. Or at least the station is still in Beckley. Not sure about the location. But I am sure someone will answer that question. I too have been gone for a little longer than you. Have you seen what was Beckley Junior High now that the college has taken over the building? I thought at the time the book was a bit pricey but have reconsidered. It is very well written and has a lot of information in it. Well worth the money. Ed: I agree! My favorite parts of the book are the section on Raleigh County pioneers & Raleigh County in the Civil War. This book is loaded! Sincerely, Mike Peters Folks: I have to agree that it seems a bit pricey. Just having the information on Raleigh County in the Civil War is worth the price of the book. Did you know we had both Union and Confederate soldiers from Raleigh County? Brothers were fighting against brothers. In August 1950, a special centennial issue of the Raleigh Register was published. Most of the articles in that issue on the earlier settlers, communities, the 1850 census, etc., are on the Raleigh County GenWeb page. If you've not read them yet, you may find them interesting. Check out "Newspaper Clippings." http://www.rootsweb.com/~wvraleig/ Gracie, who is our list coordinator, is also the county coordinator for the Raleigh County GenWeb site. Take a look at all the interesting information on her site. Another site is the Raleigh County Biographies. Check it out. "Mike's Meanderings" are archived there. The 1880 Raleigh County census is located there. And the 1890 Special Enumeration scans are there. This is the site that I maintain. http://www.rootsweb.com/~wvrcbiog/ Both Gracie and I welcome articles of interest on Raleigh County. If you're not certain which one of us should get the article, send it to either of us. We'll figure out where it fits best. Thanks much. Nyla http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~nylasgenealogy/
