Isaac MOLES was the son of Jeremiah MOLES and Elizabeth SCOTT. Mary "Polly" was the daughter of Reason WRISTON and Rachel SCARBROUGH. There were several men by the name of James WRISTON, and this particular one was called "Good Jim," because his parents died at an early age and he worked so hard to raise his younger siblings. He was the first pastor at the Log Church, Artie, and served for about 20 years. James and Rebecca WRISTON were my 2-Great Grandparents, as their daughter Almira married Grant MAYNOR. Also, Rebecca was a sister to James MOLES, my 3-Great Grandfather, but the MOLES line. As you know, it can get very confusing! LOL Sue Maynor Thompson

I have about 5 WV county history books, and I think the Raleigh County one is the best. Vicki

I was told this evening about a PETERS, from the Whitesville area, who died recently. An aunt on my mother's side called while I was out & left a message. She couldn't recall the first name, but remembered that my father's people lived, for a time near Whitesville. If someone is privy to the Whitesville paper, could they please do a lookup? I would be much obliged. Sincerely, Mike Peters [email protected]

Just to name a few James Wriston,& Joseph Workman GL Williams: There were a lot of units that men from Raleigh & surrounding counties joined during the Civil War. Some served with the 22nd VA Infantry, & the 30th Battalion VA Sharpshooters, CSA. Some served with the 7th WV Cavalry, USA. There were many men who participated as Partisan Rangers or in the Home Guard. In my family, ggg Uncle William Peters left Raleigh County, where he is found in the 1850 census, traveled back to Franklin County, VA & joined up with the 57th VA Infantry, CSA. He would die at Gettysburg. Where did James Wriston & Joseph Workman live? If you need, I have references for the 7th WV Cavalry, 22nd VA Infantry, 30 Battalion VA Sharpshooters, Boone County soldiers & probably a few others I am forgetting. I look forward to hearing from you. Sincerely, Mike Peters [email protected]
Mike, Whitesville doesn't have a newspaper. We got the Charleston Gazette. Whitesville is about a mile from Packsville, where your grandparents Sadie(Stover) and Burt Peters lived before they moved to Greenbriar County. Probably the Charleston paper online will have her obit. Greetings: I just found information The Register-Herald on line about another book that sounds interesting. C. R. Hill, Jr., has compiled what he calls a coincidental autobiography of the late Rev. Shirley Donnelly. Many of you may remember Rev. Donnelly who passed away in 1982. He wrote more than 5,000 newspaper columns, many relating to genealogy. The 50-page book cost $10 ($12 if sent by mail) and are available at Bank One in Oak Hill and Beckley, United National Bank in Fayetteville and Beckley, and at Woods Pharmacy in Oak Hill; or they can be ordered through Mr. Hill by calling 574-0509. All proceeds go to the Oak Hill Rotary Club, of which Rev. Donnelly was a member. Source: http://www.register-herald.com/articles/2004/01/01/news/cnews.txt I do not know for certain the area code for Oak Hill. (It may be 304.) Perhaps someone on the list can verify the area code. Nyla
Hi Everyone, I just wanted to tell everyone how much I enjoy reading all your posts. Both sides of my family moved to Edwight in the 30's to work in the mines. I was born there in 1951. My mom was Gaynell Sifers and my Dad was Ernest (Hunk) Layton. My sincere thanks to everyone for making this my favorite list. I look forward to reading the posts each day. Sincerely, Dotty Layton Gobel
There is an interesting article about Edwight by Johnnie Vergis at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~wvraleig/edwight.htm My Aunt Jean was born at Edwight in 1930. Her full name was Francis Reginia Stilwell. Her father's name was Shirley Stilwell who md Elizabeth Bowles. Has anyone run into the Stilwell name in their Raleigh Co research? He came from Carroll Co, Va Gracie ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, January 14, 2004 11:38 PM Subject: [WVRALEIG] Edwight, West Virginia > Hi Everyone, > > I just wanted to tell everyone how much I enjoy reading all your posts. Always looking for more info on this family who were on the 1900 Census in Richmond, Raleigh Co! I'm hoping to find out the death date for both Elijah & Louisa as well as more on sons Elihu and Henry. Genealogy has really slowed down, so it's been encouraging to see at one list active! Sharon; Thanks for the information. I just called and was told to call tomorrow when the day shift is on duty. Nyla I read in today's Beckley newspaper (www.register-herald.com) of a new book that might be of interest to some. "West Virginia Disasters, Mountain State Tragedies That Have Changed Our Lives" ... in-depth accounts of many of the catastrophes of the last century including the Point Pleasant Bridge collapse, Eccles mine explosion of 1914, the Buffalo Creek Flood, and others. The regular cost will be $24.95 but can be ordered now for $19.95. Available at the Register-Herald, telephone 1-800-950-0250.
Nina, This has nothing to do with your inquiry but your name and the fact that you live in Texas caught my attention. I too was born at Raliegh General in 1952 and I too live in Texas now. What caught my attention was your name. You wouldn't happen to live in Wichita Falls would you. A church near where my husband works has a pastor whose last name is also Christmas. Just a thought Alicia Griffin
