    1. [WVRALEIG] Samuel "Ravers" Davis / Civil War
    2. Hello -- I'm wondering if anyone has info on the military records of my GGG Grandfather, Samuel Lewis "Ravers" Davis. He was b. 7 Jul 1827 and d. 25 Dec 1905. Resided in Maple Fork, Raleigh Co. The family story is that he was originally in the Confederate Army but deserted and joined the Union Army on 25 December 1862. He enlisted (along with his brother-in-law, Granville Tyree) at the Beckley Courthouse. He is said to have been Pvt. C.A., 30th Battallion, Sharp Shooter, Raleigh Co. According to family stories, after he joined the Union Army (Abbott's Battallion), he was worried about his family who resided in Confederate-held territory. He slipped through the Confederate lines, took a uniform from a Confederate Solider (no details about how he accomplished this feat) and managed to get home to see his family. When he tried to return he was captured by Union soldiers who thought he was a spy. He was almost shot but, just in the nick of time, Capt. Abbott recognized him. I have a coopy of a photo of Ravers Davis in his uniform holding a pistol...he's posing with his friend, Joseph A. Edmunds (Pvt. Co A., 2nd VA, Jefferson Co., according to the notes on the back of the photo). I'd love to know if these stories are true...is there any record of his service in the Confederate Army? ....One more detail from family stories...during his military service he suffered eye injuries and had typhoid. Any Information Appreciated! Marguerite Mathews Families I'm researching: Blythe, Bowyer, Copeland, Davis, Humphreys, Jarrell, Kirby, Mankins, Mathews, McDaniels, Meadows, Raines, Tyree.

Who were Cornelius Short and Mourning Stanley?. Could Mourning Stanley be related to Massea Stanley, George's mother? And, how were they related? Thank you, Gracie P.S. Karen: Good to hear from you. I wholeheartedly agree with your assessment of "Smith-Rife." Their work is an invaluable tool. I see your list doesn't contain the Daniel Shumate that was Clerk of Raleigh County, husband to Narcissa Burgess & who was a civilian prisoner at Camp Chase during the Civil War. Does the "Smith-Rife Collection" mention this Daniel. I look forward to hearing from you. Man this stuff is fun! Sincerely, Mike Peters [email protected]

    1. [WVRALEIG] Civil War in Raleigh County
    2. Susan E. Richmond
    3. The following only relates to Raleigh Co. in that George O. Tabor lived there for about 2 years. However, he has many descendants who lived in or still live in Raleigh county. George O. Tabor enlisted July 15th 1861 at Princeton, Va (WV) in the Princeton Guards who were assigned to the 59th VA Inf. as Company - I (2nd). Most of the 59th, including almost all of the Princeton Guards, were captured at Roanoke Island on Feb. 6, 1862 (George O. was listed as "home sick"). Later, he served with the 17th VA Cav., Company E (this unit included 26 former Princeton Guard members). It is my understanding that the 17th VA Cav. was able to get through the lines at Appomattox and made it to Lynchburg where in April 1865 they disbanded and that George O. was with them at the time. His son James Thomas Tabor was born in OHIO on Dec. 20, 1864. The mystery is why was his wife Olive Worrell Tabor in Ohio before the war ended and where in Ohio. I know George O. lived in Ohio for 8 years following the end of the Civil War. Then he was in Kanawha Co., then in Raleigh Co. where he had some kind of a store for a few years before moving back to Mercer Co. While they were in Ohio, my great-grandmother Amanda Louemma Tabor Lyons was born. 1. [WVRALEIG] MARRIAGE LOOKUP, LAFFERTY-WHITE
    2. Hi Mike and List, Speaking on marriage lists ? John Lafferty, b 21 June 1827, d 27 May 1902 mar Lucinda White, b 1 Jan 1829, d 14 Sep 1915. Information came from their tombstones in Humphrey Davis Cemetery, Knob Branch Rd. The first census I find them on is the 1850. It appears their first child, Emily, was born sometime between September and Oct. 1849. I have not been able to find any marriage listed for them. Think you might be able to help ? Also in Sims Land Grants of WV, pg 89, I find 1858, John owned 75 acres on Paint Creek in Fayette Co. Grant issued prior to formation of WV and since the formation of Fayette Co. I also saw reference to this in the old, 1880 or so, Fayette Co. History book. There is a real dearth of information on my Laffertys of Raleigh and Fayette Cos. If anyone on this list has access to a will index for Raleigh or Fayette Cos., would they be so kind as to check if there is a will for John and/or Lucinda ? Thank you so much ! Polly

    1. [WVRALEIG] Rev Callison
    2. Deidre Basham
    3. No, Mike suggested I as questions, so those are some questions that need answers. These people are my relatives and I need the info and they were a part of Raleigh County and Wyoming County and I think they all came in from Va., like most of our relatives have. Just remember back in the 1700 thru the 1800 Va was a biggggg state. Dee

    1. [WVRALEIG] Rev. Callison's wife's name
    2. Dee: I don't know the answer to that one either. Did you happen to get an answer to your question? Nyla Who was Rev. Callison's Wife? I have never seen any one on line have his wife's name.

Rachel Harrah Moles who married James Armstrong moved to Armstrong Creek in Kanawha County. There were others of my ancestors who moved to Gallia County, Ohio, but returned soon after the war ended. I have found others who went to Pike County, KY. Sue
