    3. You're certainly welcome, Polly. The microfilm numbers are from some Family Tree Maker CDs that I have. Yes, George appears to be omitted as well. I show perhaps he died in CA in 1974. California Death Records Name: George Lafferty Date of Death: April 30, 1974 Place of Death: Yolo Date of Birth: May 25, 1883 Place of Birth: West Virginia I show a death date on Ada Susan Lafferty Dodson of December 23, 1967 but have not found a record to confirm. Here's Mary Elizabeth's obit - Raleigh Register, Beckley, W.Va. Wednesday Afternoon, October 21, 1959 Mrs. M. Painter Rites Thursday MOUNT HOPE (RNS) -- Last rites for Mrs. Mary Elizabeth Painter will be conducted in the Assembly of God Church, Mount Hope, at 2 p.m. Thursday by the Rev. She was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Mount Hope. Born at Willis Branch, Oct. 11, 1890, she was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Edward Lafferty. Survivors include two brothers, Charlie of willis Branch and George Lafferty of California; two sisters, Mrs. Ada Dotson and Mrs. Anna Bragg, both of Pax; four sons, the Rev. Tennis Painter of Burlington, Carlos of Bradley, and Robert and Jimmy Painter, both of Mount Hope; four daughters, Mrs. Beatrice Childers of Detroit, Mich., Mrs. Wilma Markham of Long Branch, Mrs. Edith Stover of Kingston, and Mrs. Peggy Camillome of California, 20 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren. The body will remain at Tyree Funeral Home in Mount Hope and will be taken to the church one hour prior to the funeral. I live in Florida. My connection to the Laverty/Lafferty line is through my great great grandparents Larkin and Elizabeth Hezeltine Massey Allen. They were cousins when they married - their mothers were Lafferty sisters. Larkin Allen was the son of John A. "Crop" and Elizabeth "Betsy" Lafferty Allen, Jr. Elizabeth Hezeltine Massey was the daughter of William C. and Martha P. "Mattie" Lafferty Massey, Sr. "Mattie" and "Betsy" Lafferty were daughters of William and Nancy Jamison Laverty/Lafferty. 3. Has anyone read this historical fiction book or know about the court case? Free in Chains by Mary B. Kegley, author, attorney, and researcher "Based on a true story filed in court papers, Free in Chains tells the unimaginable story of an Indian slave, Rachel Findlay. Although Indian slavery was illegal in Virginia at the time and Rachel was freed from those chains in Williamsburg in 1773, she was taken from Powhatan County to the frontier of Virginia before she could be truly free. There, her master, Mitchell Clay, sold her and her daughter as Negro slaves to John Draper, even though he knew they were entitled to their freedom. In what is now Pulaski County, Rachel was held illegally in slavery until 1820 when she was about sixty-seven years old. Her persistence in obtaining her freedom brought her to a seven-year court battle which eventually gave forty-two of her descendants the right to live in freedom." It's hard to think of our ancestors doing anything so totally wrong, but in reality, they were just people. I wonder if this could have had anything to do with the Indian attack on Mitchell's family. A fellow researcher in Wythe Co., VA told me about the book. I found info about the book via a Google search on Mary Kegley. 3. Hi there Mike: I figured when I sent my response, I might here from you. I called my mom last night to confirm his name was Tommy. She did not know his parent's names. Sorry I could not be of more help. There has been a lot of activity on the Raleigh County web site lately. By the way, do you know of any good books on this Stewart line? I found a book at the genealogy center in Charleston that was done by McClain Printing a very long time ago. I recently contacted them to find out if it was available, but it was not. The name of the book is "The James Stewart Family" 1740-1960 by Florence S Dickerson. It had information regarding Capt Ralph Stewart. I was having difficulty replying to many of the good e-mails on the site. I am not sure what the problem was, but now that it is fixed, you will hear more from me. Take care and God bless!
