James Wriston is buried at White Oak cemetery behind Lynn Maynor's house because I have visited that cemetery. He has a civil war tombstone. Almira & Grant Maynor are buried there in unmarked graves. I beleive Lynn Maynor knows which ones, our families should go together and put some kind of marking especially before Lynn dead. Then we will lose the location. There are civil war veterans buried in that Cemetery. Grant and Almira are my Great-grandparents. I believe that the James and Rebecca Wriston who are buried in the White Oak Cemetery behind Lynn Maynor's house is Zachariah's son, James. The reason I believe this is that I know for a fact that there is a Rebecka Moles who is buried beside James Moles in the Moles Cemetery at Artie. Rebecka Moles spelled her name with a "k" in it, and that is how it was spelled on her stone. I suspect that her husband James is buried there too, but can't recall seeing his grave. Now, I am confused. Zachariah Wriston does say in his will that he has a son named James. Do you know who this James was married to? I don't have any children for him. I have 16 James Wristons in my data base. But there are only 2 from Coal River area. James Wriston, born March 1840, born in Fayette County, Virginia, buried at White Oak Cemetery at Artie, WV. He is the son of Robert "Robin" Wriston (Riston) 1806-1867 and Keziah Scarbrough 1819-?. He married Rebecca Moles, the daughter of Issac Moles (1806-1873) and Mary "Polly" Wriston (1808-?). They were married on July 3, 1861, Raleigh County. They had only one child (Almira A Wriston). James Wriston, born 1840. He was the son of Zachariah "Bill" Wriston (1815-1880) and Amanda Naomi "Oma" Stover (1815-1877). I believe that Oma was a sister to my great great grandfather, Moses Stover. I don't know who James was married too. Anita, You are right, there are 2 James Wriston. The James Wriston that married Rebecca Moles is my great great grandparents. The misunderstanding is the other James Wriston is the son of Zacariah Wriston. James & Rebecca had only one child, Almira Wriston who married Ulysses Grant Maynor. Janes & Rebecca Wriston and Grant & Almira Maynor are buried in the White Oak Cemetery (behind Lynn Maynor's house) at Artie, up White Oak Hollow, Clear Fork Valley, Raleigh County. I will email more information about the 2 James Wristons, later. In a message dated 1/19/04 8:41:00 PM Eastern Standard Time, [email protected] writes: The regimental history for the 30th Battalion VA Sharpshooters has the following information: Davis, Samuel L. -- Private, Company A. Enlisted 9/15/1862 at Raleigh Court House, Raleigh County, VA/WV. AWOL 10/7/1862. Deserted 11/10/1862. Listed on 1850 Raleigh County Census as 23. Married Lucy Tyree on 6/24/1845. Eventually had 5 children. Lived in Town District. Brother of William Davis. Above is proof that he served in the 30th Battalion VA Sharpshooters, which is a Confederate unit. He was also with the 7th WV Cavalry, a Union regiment. His record there is verified by the following information from Ronald Ray Turner's book on the 7th WV Cavalry: Davis, Samuel -- Company H. Enlisted 25 December 1861 Raleigh County, VA/WV. 5' 10" tall, dark Complexion, hazel eyes, dark hair. On deserter's list as "may have joined rebel army." Born about 1827 in Raleigh County. William Davis, listed as a brother to Samuel, also served in the 30th Battalion VA Sharpshooters, CSA. His information is as follows: Davis, William -- Private in Company A. Enlisted 9/15/1862 at Raleigh Court House, Raleigh County, VA/WV. Absent on detached service 10/3118/62 roll. Deserted 11/10/1862. Captured at Elk River, Tennessee & sent to Camp Douglas. Released 12/1863 & joined the US Navy. Probably the William Davis listed on the 1860 Raleigh County Census as 27. Married to Lucinda (sister of W. G. Davis) on 12/1/1853. Was a farmer. Eventually had 9 children. Listed as age 48 on the 1880 Raleigh County Census. Lived in Town District. Born in 1833. Parents John & Mary. Brother of Samuel L. Davis. Remarried to Althetia Christian. on 11/17/1896. This is the first record I have came across which lists a Raleigh County citizen as serving in the Navy during the Civil War. "Susan E. Richmond" <[email protected]> wrote: Has anyone read this historical fiction book or know about the court case? Hi Susan~ Although I haven't read "Free in Chains" , I have heard the story (and there are several different versions). In his book, A History of The Middle New River Settlements and Contiguous Territories, David E. Johnson states "Mitchell Clay married in Franklin County, Virginia, in the year of 1760, Phoebe Belcher. In April, 1774, there was granted by Dunmore, the Royal Governor of Virginia, to Mitchell Clay, assignee of Lieutenant John Draper, 800 acres of land on Bluestone Creek, Clover Bottoms, then Fincastle County, Virginia, and Mercer County. By the terms of this grant Clay was required to take possession of this land within three years, clear so much per year, and render so much ground rent to the King of Great Britain. A copy of this grant is on file in the Clerk's office of Mercer County Court. In payment for this tract of land, Clay gave Draper a Negro woman and her children, executing to him therefor a bill of sale. Many years afterward, and after the death of! Mitchell Clay, which occurred in 1812, this trade gave rise to two interesting law suits; one, by the Negro for their freedom, which they succeeded in establishing ; and thereupon the representatives of Draper sued the executors of Clay and their sureties, recovering a large decree against them, resulting in the bankrupting of Captain William Smith and the estate of Colonel George N. Pearis, sureties of the executors of Clay." I've also heard that it was not a Negro...but an Indian woman that was traded for the tract of land.
