I agree with the others; this is a great site. I found my great-grandmothers death certificate in Raleigh Co. and it contained new (to me) information such as her mothers maiden name. Now, I have a new line to explore! Sure hope they expand the online birth and marriage records. Clarence, Thank you so much for this link, I found my great grandfathers death certificate and I now know at least one reason why I couldn't find it EVER before, his first name was 'Joseph', and on his death certificate it is listed as 'Joe'. Does anyone out there have any experience or advice about inquest records in Raleigh County. Are they available to the public? Using http://www.wvculture.org/vrr/, I was able to find a death certificate for my mother's father, who died in 1950. The cause of death was a gunshot wound, and the certificate indicated that there had been an inquest. I have a copy of an article that had described his death, but the shooter was a minor, so I didn't think the court records would be public, but I hadn't thought about an inquest. Any guidance would be appreciated! -- Cherie Atkinson Clark chersfmly@aol.com http://members.aol.com/chersfmly/ http://journals.aol.com/chersfmly/geniejournal/ **There are only two lasting bequests we can hope to give our children. (mailto:WVRALEIG-L@rootsweb.com) I've found mention, of a 1940 Hunter's Cemetery and C. D. Trent(?sp),funeral director, located in E. Beckley, WVA; through a link supplied on this site. Does anyone have information regarding these? Thanks, Bobbie/N.C.
Thanks so very much for sharing this information! I hope everybody is as lucky as I was in finding "missing" links! Thanks again. My grandfather is buried in a cemetery on Raleigh Hill. I'm trying to find the correct name for this cemetery and find out if there is a listing of the burials there. I have seen it called Raleigh Cemetery, East Raleigh Coal Company Cemetery and Smith Cemetery. Here are a few names of people that I know are buried there: Canada Smith Isadore Smith Margaret Minton James William Bru(e)baker Does anyone know what the proper name of this cemetery is and if there is a listing? Thanks for your help, Pam Kerschner South Carolina

This seems like a good time to mention the Raleigh County book that Gracie and I are publishing. Some of you have already contributed articles on your family for the book. We took a brief "vacation" and have not been working on the book for a few months. But we plan to get back into this project soon. If you're interested in contributing information on your family lines, let me know, and I'll send you the information. We are not including information on living individuals, so the 1930 census information is as far as we will include information on any family. Basically, as long as your ancestors were in the county from 1850-1930, they can be included. Nyla ==================== I don't know if there is a way to find out if your family is included, since it is not published yet. No one has a copy of the book yet. You may be right about that, but I guess it hasn't been released yet. I am anxious to see the photos of how it used to be. Most of Raleigh County is still a beautiful place, but so many of the towns are no longer there anymore, so it would be interesting to see what it looked like. :) ----- Original Message ----- From: "Marcia Andy Hilton" <gihilton@msn.com> To: <WVRALEIG-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, August 30, 2005 9:23 PM Subject: Re: [WVRALEIG] "Reflections of Raleigh County," a pictorial history book. > Gracie, > I thought it was published, as it is to be shipped between September 1st > and the 15th? Thanks so much for your help. I will try that tomorrow. Cathy, If you call the phone number that is listed in the article and talk to Nancy Stewart, I'm sure she can either tell you or get the info for you. I didn't ask her for that info but did other things and she was very helpful. Thank you so much for your kind reply. Do you know of any way someone can find out if their family is included prior to buying this book? What years are covered? Thanks, AGAIN! I just ordered one. The regular bound (like a year book) is $29.15, inc. shipping. There was only one more of the leather bound "Collector" editions left, it is $85.50, inc. shipping. Sorry to bother...what is the actual price of the regular book you mention AND is there any reference index to be sure you are getting folks that you know? Thanks. Production is under way on "Reflections of Raleigh County," the pictorial history book featuring more than 250 pictures of men, women, families and historical places in Raleigh County. Just a short time left to order Raleigh pictorial history book. I talked with Nancy Stewart at the newspaper office this morning and she has now received orders for 921 books. The first set of proofs has been corrected and returned and the second set will soon be corrected and ready to return. Delivery of the book should be between Sept. 1 and 15. At this time, there are only 12 reservations left for the 50 leather-bound, hand-numbered limited edition books. Those wishing to order copies of the standard edition have a very short time left in which to take advantage of the discount price. After publication, the price will increase. Anyone wishing to buy or reserve a book at the pre-published price should do so as soon as possible. A $10 down payment on the standard version or $35 on the limited edition, will confirm your reservation of the book for the pre-published price. Publisher Frank Wood said a limited amount of extra copies will be ordered by The Register-Herald and if not already reserved, the book will be sold at the increased price. For more information on ordering this book, or to order by credit card, you may call Nancy Stewart at 1-800-950-0250, Ext. 424. __________________________________________________________ Message transport security by GatewayDefender.com 11:39:09 AM ET - 8/30/2005 __________________________________________________________ Message transport security by GatewayDefender.com 5:40:33 PM ET - 8/30/2005 __________________________________________________________ Message transport security by GatewayDefender.com 8:09:07 PM ET - 8/30/2005
