John was likely Baptist or Methodist. I am trying to work backwards from Bourbon County, KY, where my ancestor Philip Cox lived from 1800-1830 or so (he died in 1834, Montgomery Co., KY). There are apparently no records left that name Philip's parents. It's believed that he came from s.w. Pennsylvania or n.w. Virginia rather than NJ or NC. The Preston Co. record is the only one I've found for a Philip in n.w. VA. Two John Cox's that seem to be connected to Philip also moved to Bourbon County, KY. One was John Cox, married to Susannah Groom, and the other, John Cox, married to Margaret McCray. Ultimately I am trying to learn whether John & Margaret were Philip's parents, or what the relationship of the three men was. I don't know if any of them had land in Virginia. All lived in Kentucky by 1800, so that eliminates the Monongalia War of 1812 veteran/Sheriff. Philip Cox was born ~1779, if later census records give the age right.
