Hi - I'm new to the list and my West Virginia Hartley line leaves much to be desired. I have been told that The History of Preston County contains many Hartley names. Actually, I don't know if that is true or not, but if.so, how can I obtain a copy? Thanks in advance. Olin Hartley Tyler, TX. ohartley@suddenlink.net

Actually, I don't know if that is true >or not, but if.so, Hi, Olin, Welcome! There are actually several history books on Preston. The one called "History of Preston. . . ." by Samuel T. Wiley, pub'd in 1882 does contain information on a Hartley family. On p. 442, in the section on the Valley District, Wiley writes: "In 1813, Edward Harley came from Fairmont, and lived in a cabin on the site of Hartley's store in Masontown. His wife was Margaret Miller. Their children were Calder, Malin, Henry, Amos, Elizabeth, Charlotte, Mary, Nancy, Jane, Emily, and Peter M. ex-justice of the peace and a leading member of the M.E. church at Masontown. His son Edgar M. is a merchant at Masontown, and his sons S.C, L.E and H.P. are merchants at Meyersdale, Penn., and his son J.M. is a merchant at Independence and Fairmont." There's a bit more on Edgar N., J.M., and Peter M. on subsequent pages, and another mention of Coleman, Edward, and S.W. who may also be S. Waitman Hartley. That book may be available from The McClain Printing Company of Parsons, WV who did a reprint in 1968 and I believe a more recent reprint, too. http://www.mcclainprinting.com/ Oren F. Morton wrote "A History of Preston County West Virginia, Vol I." It was published in 1914. On p. 358, Morton writes that Edward Hartley came from Fairmont in 1813 and purchased 640 acres. He adds that H. Amos Hartley was "well known in agricultural circles and has been in the State Legislature and has held other positions of honor and trust." On p. 438, Morton writes that Peter M. was b. 1810 d. 1882 m. (1) Susan Swindler, (2) Jemima Graham Bradshaw; Charlotee b. 1813 d. 1889 m. (1) James Holt, (2) Hiram Orr; Mary went to Indiana; Calder b. 1817 d. 1902 m. Deborah Menear; Joseph M. b. 1810 d. 1898 m. Harriet Morgan and went to Iowa; Henry b. 1825 d. 1898 m. Agnes Bayles and went to Monongalia, WV; Emily m. Thomas Dunn and also went to Monongalia, WV; Nancy m. Robert McMillen; Jane m. B. Franklin Cobun. Looks like you can get a copy of that book via: http://genealogy.wehaveneatstuff.com/A-History-of-Preston-County-West/M/B001IVE8C6.htm?utm_campaign=froogle&utm_medium=organic&utm_source=froogle The Vol. II of A History of Preston. . . . was written by J.R. Cole. It contains bio's on Henry A. and John E. Hartley and likely has other references to this family but the book does not contain an every name index. Best regards, Jane
