Joe, I'd love to find any information you may have the Sanders/Saunders Family on Sigler street or death of Phoebe Shank-Sanders. Thanks, Debbie Sanders All: I have a small book on the History of Kingwood ("Indians plus the first 150 Years") by Bill Williams. I've had it for some time, but just recently got the urge to read it again. My original intention was to create a (sort of) index to the names included, but his writing style isn't very organized (no offense, Bill) to do that, so it early on became way more trouble that it would probably have been worth. At any rate, I can look up some name/info if folks out there have any kind of date references - that's how the book is organized. As a caveat, please don't send a "give me all the information on ..." kind of message - the way the book is written, I'd have to go through the entire thing for each request. This is the kind of info included: Jacob Funk built a tannery in 1810, on the north side of Main Street, near the intersection of Sigler Street. Funk sold his tannery to William Sigler in 1813. BTW: I don't subscribe to any of the groups that are gatewayed from RootsWeb, so if you make a request, it'll have to be to and from this ListServ group [WVPRESTO]. J. W. Parks lived in the Byrne house in the 1830s, and later Walter Amos owned the property. The building was torn down in February 1992 and the logs from the old section were hauled to Virginia. - In the fall of 1873, brick pavement was laid in front of the Parks and Co. store. That's it! This book doesn't have any genealogical info in it - only short anecdotal stuff like the two lines above. Still ... Parks was my 3gr-granduncle who for a number of years, up to his death, was cashier of the Bank of Kingwood. He m. Mary R. Heermans. However, I have him b. 1834 which could only place him as in the cabin living with his parents, Henry Lone Parks & Elizabeth Garner. Henry was a "cabinetmaker", which may mean undertaker in those days. ; ) I have never seen anything about a "Parks store". Will be interesting to find out, tho. Elizabeth Garner Parks was dgtr. of William Garner & Frances Roberts. William d. on farm 3 mi. n.e. of Kingwood on Cheat River Hill. All the tidbits add to the story of our ancestors lives and, of course, create more questions. lol We all thank you for helping!! Our family tree says that the doctor you found is Dr. Felix Elliott, for many years a prominent doctor and Baptist preacher in Preston and he also conducted a store in Kingwood which he sometimes used as a site for quick marriages. His son Felix Elliott Jr. was a banker in Kingwood for many years. Dr. Elliott's wife was Mary Startzman of Aurora. They had 10 children but only 5 grew to adults. 1-Flora married D.C. Huges, 2-Lillie married Coffman, 3-Edward S. died after graduating law school, 4-Emma married a Werner of Ohio, and 5-Felix Jr. married Florence D. Vickery. I believe the Academy trustee is William Elliott(b.ca 1790's) ,the first son of Abraham and Jane (Daugherty) Elliott, who married Susan Jeffers. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Joe & Erin Hartman" <wegotrocks@verizon.net> To: wvpresto@rootsweb.com Sent: Thursday, January 15, 2009 8:04:50 PM GMT -05:00 US/Canada Eastern Subject: Re: [WVPRESTO] A book on Kingwood A couple of items are all ... - In January 1841, an academy for the instruction of Preston County youth was established.
