Bev - The Preston County marriage record of Lizzie N. Braham indicates that she married in 1884 to James W. (not John William) Freeland. The license was issued at the instance of William Paugh, with a letter from the father. I have in my files a James Braham married to Anna Paugh. They had about 16 children, two names of which I don't have. With this many children, it would not be surprising to find that one or more were raised by someone else. I didn't find a Lizzie in the 1870 or 1880 Preston census. There were more Paughs in Garrett Co., Md. than in Preston Co. James and Anna Braham were at Terra Alta in the 1880 census but Lizzie (probably aged about 14) wasn't there. If it were my search, I'd take a look at the 1880 Garrett Co. Md.
