I heard --- but have NO proof that he was the son of Randolph Huffman and Mary Ann Hoffman. Mary Ann Hoffman/Huffman married David Shahan and Thomas B Huffman age 7 is listed in the 1850 Preston Census with David and Mary A Shahan. Edie, When Mrs Ella (Hoffman) Hillard died intestate in 1927, she left no descendants. She was survived by a half-sister, Mrs Jane Hovey. She was preceded by one full brother, Harrison Hoffman, and ten half-brothers and half-sisters. Distribution of her estate was made to her surviving half-sister, nieces and nephews, and great nieces and nephews when nieces and nephews were deceased. Mary Ann Shahan was a half-sister. Mary's seven children were entitled to one-twelfth of Ella Hillard's estate. They are named as follows: Thomas Hoffman (deceased), Rebecca Sanders, David W Shahan, John W Shahan, Philip N Shahan (deceased), Tena Rosier (deceased) & Charlotte Knotts. This document shows that Thomas B Hoffman was Mary Ann (Hoffman) Shahan's son but, of course, does not give his paternity. Some members of this family used the Hoffman spelling while others used Huffman. Hope this helps.
