Perhaps 25 years ago or more, my parents and I visited a grandson of Mary Samantha Fortney. He related a story about Mary and her pregnancy and we also discussed the Pell connection. In addition, I corresponded with and visited Elsie (Fortney) Phillips, daughter of Draper Fortney. I still have her letters, but will have to search for them. In my opinion, you have presented a convincing argument. I'm intrigued that you have this letter some 130 years later. How are you related to Mary Samantha Fortney? As you have this artifact, do you have any old photos? I have searched for many years for a photograph of Barton Fortney, who lived until 1896, but without luck.
